PROBLEM
The 117-2247 Drawbar Draft Balls on certain 24H Motor Graders may not be heat treated correctly and may fail within 4000 hours. The draft balls on these machines need to be replaced with a new 243-6690 Draft Ball.AFFECTED PRODUCT

Remove all 117-2247 Draft Balls from dealer parts stock.

Refer to the Service Manual, Operation and Maintenance Manual, and Parts Book as necessary.
Replace the existing 117-2247 Draft Ball with a new 243-6690 Draft Ball.
Measure the end play that is between the ball and the cap. The end play should be 0.6 ± 0.2 mm (.02 ± .01 inch). Adjust the end play, if necessary. The correct procedure is in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the 24H Motor Grader. The Media Number is SEBU6970-07.
Check the torque on the eight bolts that hold the ball in place. The correct torque is 900 ± 100 N·m (664 ± 74 lb ft).
When assembling the drawbar to the bolster tighten the eight bolts to a torque of 1800 ± 200 N·m (1328 ± 148 lb ft).

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated March 22, 2004 when scheduling this service. You will not be charged for the service performed.
