NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.
NOTE: This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS8917" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.
Termination Date
June 30, 1998Problem
In some applications the rotor transmission second speed clutch friction discs may fail in certain RM-350 Reclaimer Mixers and SM-350 Stabilizer Mixers.
Affected Product
Model & Identification Number
RM350 (5FK1-51, 5FK53-86, 5FK88, 5FK89, 5FK101-107, 5FK109-112, 5FK114)
SM-350 (1RM1-67, 1RM69, 1RM75, 1RM78)
Parts Needed
Action Required
Refer to the service manual as required.
1. Replace the existing 6Y9807 Friction Discs with new 1045765 Friction Discs. See the attached rework
2. Replace the existing 1102399 Lube Pump with a new 1352689 Higher Output Pump.
NOTE: New lube pump can only be used with new 1045765 Friction Discs, otherwise, rotor transmission overheating will occur.
3. Rewire rotor speed select switch. See the Illustration.
4. Reset engine idle to 1100 RPM.
Service Claim Allowances
NOTE: This is a 24-hour job if done before failure. After failure an additional 8 hours will be allowed to clean the system. If equipped with a cab, an additional 8 hours will be allowed.
Parts Disposition
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.

- (1-Rework Procedure)
Rework Procedure
Refer to the Service Manual as required for each of the following.
Transmission Removal:
... Lift and block machine
... Remove front wheels
... Remove 1070320 Access Panels from fender wells
... Disconnect steer hoses
... Disconnect foot brake lines
... Remove front console acess panel(1078415)
... Disconnect wiring harness
... Disconnect wiring harness to ECM in right console
... Disconnect rotor float valve (Leave hoses connected and lay down away from transmission)
... Remove wires from ground stud
... Remove console mounting bolts
... Lift off console
... Remove frame crossbar (1091286)
... Disconnect front U-joint drive shaft. (Compress and let hang down)
... Relieve brake & back off adjustment screw
... Remove brake
... Remove Auxiliary and Propel pumps.Leave hoses attached and place pumps on fenders
... Remove and cap transmission lines
... Install lifting devices in transmission
... Remove bolts from rear transmission mounting tabs
... Lift transmission and rear of engine (Approximately 1")
... Support rear of engine
... Remove mounting tabs
... Unbolt transmission
... Lift out transmission
Transmission Repair:
... Build support to hold transmission as vertical as possible.Rotor brake end down
... Remove 8 inside bolts holding drive gear down.Note location of parts
... Loosen 10 bolts around housing assembly (8E7523)
... Install lifting eyes in housing
... Lift out housing
... Tap on manifold (8E1757) to make sure it stays in position
... Lift out clutch piston (8E9599).Make sure springs and dowels stay in position
... Remove damaged clutch pack (9P7390 or 6Y9807)
... At this point it may be necessary to repair other parts if other rotor speeds are also out.
... Clean pan to remove contamination
... Install clutch pack consisting of two new 1045765 Friction Discs
... Reinstall springs and dowels.Make sure springs are in the pockets.
... Install clutch piston.Be careful not to damage ring seals for piston (8P9569 and 8P2022)
... If clutch leaks during check out, the seals are probably the problem
... Set in manifold with bolts
... Make two dowels to position the drive gear assembly and install
... Tighten and torque all bolts on inside and outside bolt circle
... Remove control valve
... Apply air pressure to check operation of second speed clutch pack
... Check for contamination in valve and clean
... Install control valve
... Before installing transmission, check filter and replace. If bypassed, the pump, valve, and propel transmission may need to be cleaned and flushed

NOTE: By re-wiring switch as shown above, the operator will only be able to start rotor in First speed before choosing higher speeds.
Resetting Engine Idle Speed
1. Remove linkage rod (#1).
2. Adjust engine idle stop screw (#2) to set engine idle to 1100 RPM.
3. Adjust linkage rod (#1) to line back up with bolt.
4. Reconnect linkage rod (#1).
