The referenced publications either do not show the correct plug, or the photograph is unclear for checking oil level in the pump drive gearbox on PR-1000 Pavement Profilers (same design used also on ER-1000 Pavement Profilers 505109-Up). Cross out both photographs referred to, and write a note referring to this Service Magazine article.
The CORRECT plug location for checking the oil level in the gearbox is the HIGHER of the two plugs on the right side (the side with the gear-type pump). See illustration. Maintain the oil level at that level, and adequate lubrication is provided. Do not use an elbow or other standpipe parts in the plug hole. This will cause the box to have too much oil and could cause short component life.
Location of correct oil level plug.
The upper plug should be used because the gearbox on these machines is mounted at a 30° angle. The lower plug is for applications in which the gearbox is mounted horizontally.
