3412 Generator Set Caterpillar

Oil Pressure Is Low

Usage:

3412 DK6

NOTICE

Do not operate the engine with low oil pressure. Engine damage will result. If the measured engine oil pressure is low, discontinue engine operation until the problem is corrected.

Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot low engine oil pressure or use this procedure if the below diagnostic code is active. Access the monitoring system on the Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes.

Table 1
Event Code
Code and Description  Conditions which Generate this Code  System Response
100-01 Low Oil Pressure Warning   The engine oil pressure is below a map-dependent value for one second. The engine has been running for 15 seconds.  The engine will be derated. The code is logged.

Probable Causes

  • Low engine oil level

  • Dirty engine oil filters

  • Restriction at engine oil pump

  • Restriction in engine oil cooler

  • Fuel dilution of engine oil

  • Camshaft and/or camshaft bearings

  • Crankshaft bearings

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Inspect the Engine Oil Level.

Engine oil level

Result : The engine oil level is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result : The engine oil level is NOT OK.

Repair : If the engine oil level is low, add engine oil.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Inspect the Engine Oil Filter.

Engine oil filter

Result : The engine oil filter is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result : The engine oil filter is NOT OK.

Repair : If the engine oil filter is dirty, install a new engine oil filter. Check the operation of the bypass valve for the filter. Clean the bypass valve and the housing. If necessary, install new parts.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check for Blockage of the Inlet Screen in the Engine Oil Pump.

A. Examine the engine oil pump for excessive wear.

Engine oil pump

Result : The engine oil pump is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result : The engine oil pump is NOT OK.

Repair : Repair and/or replace the engine oil pump as necessary.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Inspect the Engine Oil Cooler.

Engine oil cooler

Result : The engine oil cooler is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result : The engine oil cooler is NOT OK.

Repair : Clean the engine oil cooler cores and/or install new engine oil cooler cores.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.

5. Check for the Presence of Fuel in Lubricating Oil.

Fuel dilution

Result : There is no sign of fuel dilution.

Proceed to Test Step 6.

Result : There is fuel dilution present.

Repair : Check the fuel injectors for leaks and/or cracks. Check the cylinder head for leaks.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.

6. Inspect the Camshaft and/or Camshaft Bearings.

A. Check the components for excessive wear. Excessive wear is an indication of a blocked oil passage.

B. Inspect the crankshaft and/or crankshaft bearings. Check the components for excessive wear.

Camshaft
Camshaft bearings

Result : The camshaft and/or camshaft bearings are worn.

Repair : Replace the camshaft and/or bearings.
