Introduction

This Special Instruction outlines the procedure for seismic anchor installation of multi module systems. This procedure should be followed during the installation of the flywheel energy storage system.

Important Safety Instructions

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should also be observed.

Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.

A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.

Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe.

Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures used.

A forklift has to lift the weight of each of the UPS assemblies.

Crushing hazards exist when using forklift machines and equipment to move and position the UPS assembly units in place. Read and understand the instructions and warnings in the forklift machine Operation and Maintenance Manual. Failure to follow the instructions or heed the warnings could cause serious injury or death.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from lifting, moving, and lowering heavy assemblies.

A heavy assembly can slip and fall off the forks of the fork lift if the assembly is not properly balanced and secured onto the forks of the fork lift .

Be sure that the assembly is properly balanced and secured on the forks of the fork lift.

Be sure that the fork lift has the correct capacity to lift the stated weight of the assembly.

For reference, the correct weight of the assembly is listed elsewhere within this document information.

----------------------

NOTICE

The system must be installed with an appropriately rated service disconnect.

Connect only Class 2 limited energy circuits to DB-9 and RJ11 communication connectors.

Flywheel energy storage units may contain hazardous AC and DC voltages and require a thorough system check before applying electrical power. Only qualified persons should apply power to the system, perform the initial pre-start check, and the initial start-up.

Note: The flywheel units must be handled with care to avoid damage to the moving and electrical components and injury resulting from mishandling. Under no circumstances should the flywheel system be moved while the flywheel rotor is turning or before the protective bearing retainers are installed.

Note: The seismic anchoring instructions contained in this document must be followed. For more information about site preparation and installation instructions, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8517.

Multi Module Unit Cabinet Anchor Installation

Perform the following procedure for anchor installation of multi module unit cabinets.

(1) Concrete flooring

(2) Hilti Kwik Bolt II

Four bolts (2) are used to anchor the cabinet. Each bolt (1) is a 5/8" Hilti Kwik Bolt II. The hole depth must be at least 101.6 mm (4 inch).

The concrete must be able to withstand the weight of the unit. If normal concrete is used, the concrete must be able to support 20684 kPa (3000 psi) minimum. If light weight concrete is used, the concrete must be able to support 27579 kPa (4000 psi) minimum.

(3) Seismic tie-down MMU bushing

The cabinet requires four seismic tie-down MMU bushings.

  1. Refer to installation drawings provided by the Caterpillar dealer for anchor locations.

  1. The floor structure must be able support the equipment weight shown and the following anchor forces:

    Vmax = 4448 N (1000 lb)/anchor

    Tmax = 5338 N (1200 lb)/anchor

  1. Install the expansion anchors in accordance with International Council of Building Officials (ICBO) "Report ER-4627".

  1. As a test, torque half of the installed expansion anchors to a torque of 108 N·m (80 lb ft). The test is per "California Building Code" CBC 1925B.3.5. For acceptance, the test torque must be reached within one-half (1/2) turn of the nut. The test time must be for 24 hours minimum after the anchors are installed. If any anchor fails testing, test all anchors. Test equipment must be calibrated by an approved testing laboratory in accordance with standard recognized procedures.

  1. For installations on concrete slabs with a thickness less than 5" but at least 2-1/2" and a minimum compressive strength of 3000 psi, use the following criteria:

    • Use four 5/8" A307 through bolts in lieu of expansions anchors

    • Provide a standard nut and washer at the underside of the concrete slab.

    • When through bolts are used with metal decking and concrete fill, provide a standard nut and a 2" x 2" x 1/4" plate washer on the underside of the decking.

    • If the plate washer does not fully contact the deck, contact the technical communicator to review the installation design in accordance with product specifications

  1. Locate expansion anchors or through-bolts at least 304.8 mm (12 inch) from the edge of concrete.

  1. Anchorage design is in accordance with the 1998 "California Building Code" of emergency power supply systems.

    Vmax = 887 N·m (654 lb ft)/anchor.

    Tmax = 1411 N·m (1041 lb ft)/anchor.

  1. Install the expansion anchors in accordance with ICBO "Report ER-4627".
