Start By:

  1. Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods.

  2. Remove the exhaust manifolds.


    NOTICE

    Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

    Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Remove bolts (2) and the washers. Remove manifold shield (1).

  2. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto valve lifter (3). Remove bolts (4). Remove valve lifter (3).

  3. Remove integral seal (5).

  4. Repeat Steps 1 and 3 for the manifold shields and the remaining valve lifters.

  1. Install integral seal (5).

    1. If the 397-4038 Valve Lifter (3) is being used, install dowels (3A) into the cylinder block.

  2. Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto valve lifter (3). Position valve lifter (3) onto the engine. Install bolts (4). Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

  3. Position manifold shield (1) and install the washers and bolts (2).

  4. Repeat Steps 1 and 3 for the manifold shield and the remaining valve lifters.

End By:

  1. Install the exhaust manifolds.

  2. Install the rocker shaft and pushrods.

Disassembly Procedure

Start By:

  1. Remove the valve lifter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Lifter - Remove".

  1. Remove bolts (1). Remove shaft assembly (2) from housing (3).

  2. Remove levers (4) from shaft (5). Remove thrust washer (6) from shaft (5).

Assembly Procedure


    NOTICE

    Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

  1. Install thrust washer (6) onto shaft (5). Install levers (4) onto shaft (5).

  2. Install shaft assembly (2) into housing (3). Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 105 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft).

End By:

  1. Install the valve lifter. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Lifter - Install".
