Engine Storage Information

Caterpillar recommends an ongoing process of identification and monitoring of engines that are located at dealerships, customers, OEM's and storage facilities of the dealers that may require storage and storage preservation. If long-term storage of the engines is required, procedures and recommendations exist, in order to prepare Caterpillar engines for storage up to one year.

The engine should be stored in a controlled environment prior to delivery. The storage environment should not have extreme variations in temperature or humidity. The storage environment should prevent exposure to ultraviolet light. Proper storage procedures are required in order to maintain the service life of the product.

Utilize the practices and procedures that are described in Special Instruction, SEHS9031, "Storage Procedure for Caterpillar Products" to ensure the optimum health and durability of the product. Also utilize the procedures described in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7599 for storage of engines regarding engine belts.

Engine Storage

Loosen all belts prior to storage.

Removal from Storage

Check the condition of the fan and alternator belts. Replace the belts, if necessary. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace" or refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belts - Inspect/Replace" for the correct procedure.

Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace

Currently a Clavis belt tension gauge is used at the Marine Center of Excellence to measure the tension on the V-belts that are listed below.

Table 1
New Part Number     Description
4P-1666     V-Belt
5B-8473     V-Belt
7C-9001     V-Belt
9L-6641     V-Belt
9L-6643     V-Belt
9L-6645     V-Belt
9L-6647     V-Belt Gp

Inspect the alternator belt and any accessory belts for wear and for cracking. Replace the belts if the belts are not in good condition. To check the belt tension, apply 110 N (25 lb) of force midway between the pulleys. A correctly adjusted belt will deflect 13 mm to 19 mm (0.50 inch to 0.75 inch) .

Slippage of loose belts can reduce the efficiency of the driven components. Vibration of loose belts can cause unnecessary wear on the following components:

  • Belts

  • Pulleys

  • Bearings

Verification of Procedures of Storage

Although verification of storage is not required in order to maintain the warranty, this fact does not eliminate the need for proper storage procedures. In the case of a claim for warranty, Caterpillar may require documentation which proves that the recommended storage procedures were followed. Engines that are damaged by faulty storage or preservation will not be considered to have a factory defect in material or workmanship.
