Plate Locations and Film Locations
Cat engines are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate that are mounted on the engine.
Cat dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. This information permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.

The serial number plate is located on the left side of the cylinder block near the rear of the engine.
The following information is stamped on the serial number plate: engine serial number, model and arrangement number.

The information plate is on the valve cover. The following information is stamped on the information plate: engine serial number, engine model, engine arrangement number, maximum altitude for the engine, horsepower, high idle, full load rpm, fuel settings and other information.
