New Piston And Connecting Rod Are Tapered In Area Of Piston Pin{1213,1214,1218,1219}

Usage:

3208 Industrial (90N37285-Up),
Marine (75V4002-Up),
Vehicular (79V5380-Up),
and Truck (32Y1-Up) Engines

Description of Change: The pistons and connecting rods used in the above 3208 Engines are of a different design than those used in earlier engines. As shown in the Illustration, the sides of the new connecting rod and the inside of the new piston in the area of the piston pin bore are tapered. Formerly, the sides of the connecting rod and the inside area of the piston were straight. Also, the crown area of the new piston is thicker than the former piston.

The different design of the new piston and connecting rod is needed because the 3208 Engines now have higher cylinder pressures. The higher cylinder pressures are caused by a faster fuel injection rate. A thicker crown on the new piston gives added strength in this area. Also, the new piston is stronger than the former piston because more of the piston pin is in the bore of the new piston.

New tapered connecting rod.

6V100 Tool Arrangement in use.

Adaptable To: The new parts used together, are adaptable to all earlier 3208 Engines. The weight of the new piston and rod is exactly the same as the former piston and rod. The same piston pin is used in both. For this reason, a new piston, rod, and pin can be installed in one or more cylinders of an earlier engine and the engine will still be in balance. It is not necessary to install a complete set of pistons and rods if new parts are installed in earlier engines.

NOTE: The 6V100 Tool Arrangement must be used to correctly remove the old piston pin bearing and install the new bearing in the tapered connecting rod.
