All Vehicles Equipped With An Earlier 6N5906 Electric Service Meter
Reference: Service Magazine October 9, 1978, Page 2 "Improvements To The 6N5906 Electric Service Meter".
Description of Change: A fuse and wire assembly is now available for voltage spike (sudden increase) protection for the earlier 6N5906 Electric Service Meters. On earlier electric service meters, it is possible for high voltage spikes (approximately 200 volts) to increase pressure inside the case and cause separation of the lens and bezel from the case. Two conditions must be present for high voltage spikes. One, the batteries are not connected to the charging circuit and two, the alternator regulator is damaged so it sends full field current to the alternator.
The new fuse and wire assembly, shown in the Illustration, can be installed between the meter and the harness. During service work on any machine equipped with an early service meter, install the new fuse and wire assembly. For identification of earlier or improved service meters, look at the part number on the face of the service meter. On improved 6N5906 Service Meters, the 59 in the part number (6N 5906) has a line under it. On earlier service meters, there is no line under the 59 in the part number (6N5906).
