Timing Dimension For Fuel Injection Pumps Changed; 1P7410 Timing Plates Have More Exact Degree Marks{0650,1250}

Usage:

3406 Truck Engines With Direct Injection Fuel Systems And Turbocharged (California Only) Or Turbocharged And Aftercooled

Two new arrangements of the 3406 Truck Engine are available. Each arrangement has a different timing dimension for the fuel injection pump. The 3406 Truck Engine (300 HP at 2100 RPM and 300 HP at 1900 RPM) with direct injection and a turbocharger (California only) has a 22.5° BTC (before top center) static timing. The 3406 Truck Engine (350 HP at 1900 RPM) (not available in California) with direct injection, a turbocharger and an aftercooler has a 26.5° BTC static timing. All other 3406 Engines with direct injection have a 28° BTC static timing.

To check the timing dimension, use the 5P6600 Timing Fixture Group and Special Instruction Form SMHS7130.

NOTE: Until revisions are made to Special Instruction Form SMHS7130, use the chart that follows for the new arrangements of the 3406 Truck Engine. See the Special Instructions for the tools needed.

When early 1P7410 Timing Plates are used to check the lifter setting on these new arrangements, Form SEHS7306 must also be used. Form SEHS7306 is made up of six decals with marks every .5° that are to be attached to the 1P7410 Timing Plate at six specific locations. These decals permit a serviceman to read the .75° dimensions for the new 3406 Truck Engine Arrangements. Later 1P7410 Timing Plates will have marks every .5° instead of the present 1° intervals. Install the decals over the degree marks between the degree ranges that follow: 40° to 60°, 100° to 120°, 160° to 180°, 220° to 240°, 280° to 300° and 340° to 360° (see the illustration).
