Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

The ""Procedure" " in this Technical Information Bulletin should be followed if the output of the battery charger is not at the nominal voltage value. The battery charger is not necessarily faulty. The battery charger may be responding properly to the ambient temperature.

Problem

The open-frame battery chargers that are utilized with the EMCP3 control panels are equipped with temperature compensation circuitry. Occasionally, the battery chargers will intermittently initiate an erroneous alarm for either a Low Battery Voltage or a High Battery Voltage. These erroneous alarms are attributed to the thresholds that are set for the alarms. The thresholds that are set are improper for the battery chargers with compensation for temperature.

At high temperatures, the battery charger could produce an output voltage that is below the "LOW BATTERY CHARGER SYS VOLT" warning setpoint of the EMCP3 control panel. Thus, the alarm condition is activated.

At low temperatures, battery chargers that are equipped with the boost feature could produce an output voltage that is greater than the "HIGH BATTERY VOLTAGE" warning setpoint of the EMCP3 control panel. Thus, the alarm condition is activated.

The following items can have an influence on the circuitry for the temperature compensation:

  • The EMCP3 control panel is exposed to radiant heat.

  • The air flow in the Generator Set and/or around the Generator Set package is restricted.

Refer to the following list for some sources of radiant heat:

  • Sunlight

  • Close machines that generate heat

  • Operation of a Jacket Water Heater within a canopy

  • The Generator Set has just finished running and the forced air that is cooling the generator set has ceased.

  • Insufficient air flow within the control panel can cause heat buildup within the enclosure.

Solution

The following setpoints have been updated as a improvement on new orders for the Generator Sets:

  • EMCP3 "LOW BATTERY CHARGER SYS VOLT"

  • EMCP3 "HIGH BATTERY VOLTAGE"

Refer to Table 2.

Affected Parts

Refer to Table 1 for the list of parts that are affected:

Procedure

Before replacing the battery charger for these false alarms, the service technician should confirm the following EMCP3 setpoints. Also, the service technician should confirm that there is adequate ventilation.

Note: Some battery chargers do not produce the rated output when a battery is not connected. Refer to Engine News, SEBD9440, "Improved Battery Chargers For Gensets are Available" for troubleshooting steps.

To avoid false alarms, adjust the warning setpoints according to Table 2.

Table 2
Warning Setpoints
    System     Setpoint
"LOW BATTERY CHARGER SYS VOLT" Warning     Generator Set (12 VDC)     12.5 VDC
Generator Set (24 VDC) 25 VDC
"HIGH BATTERY VOLTAGE" Warning     Generator Set (24 VDC)     15 VDC
Generator Set (24 VDC) 30 VDC
