Start By:

  1. Remove the torque converter.

  1. Use Tooling (A) to remove retaining ring (1) from the shaft.

  2. Remove planetary carrier (2).

  3. Use a hammer and a punch to push pin (3) into shaft (7).

  4. Remove the following components from planetary carrier (2): shaft (7), thrust disc (4), thrust disc (6), and planetary gear (5).

  5. Remove the bearing from planetary gear (5).

  6. Remove pin (3) from shaft (7).

  7. Repeat Step 3 through Step 6 for the remaining planetary gears.

  8. Remove bolt (11) and sensor (9).

  9. Remove bolts (10) and outlet relief valve (8).

  10. Position the torque converter on suitable cribbing.

  11. Remove bolt (13) and yoke (12). Remove bolts (14).

  12. Attach Tooling (B), Tooling (D), and a suitable lifting device to housing assembly (15). The weight of housing assembly (15) is approximately 111 kg (245 lb). Use Tooling (C) to separate housing assembly (15) from the torque converter assembly. Remove housing assembly (15).

  13. Remove retaining ring (16) and gear (19) from housing (15).

  14. Remove retaining ring (18) and bearing (17) from housing (15).

  15. Remove bolts (20) and solenoid valve assembly (21).

  16. Remove O-ring seal (22) from solenoid valve assembly (21).

  17. Remove bolts (23) and solenoid valve (24).

  18. Remove O-ring seals (25) from solenoid valve (24).

  19. Remove O-ring seals (27) and lip seal (26).

  20. Remove bolts (29) and gear (28).

  21. Use Tooling (E) to remove retaining ring (30).

  22. Remove shaft (31) and the bearing.

  23. Remove seal rings (33) and seal rings (34) from shaft (31).

  24. Remove bearing (32) from shaft (31).

  25. Remove bearing race (35) from the shaft, if necessary.

    Note: Bearing race (35) will be destroyed upon removal.

  26. Remove bolts (36) from clutch housing assembly (37).

  27. Install Tooling (F) and attach a suitable lifting device to clutch housing (37). The weight of clutch housing (37) is approximately 78 kg (173 lb). Remove clutch housing (37).

  28. Remove snap ring (39) and turbine assembly (38).

  29. Remove bolts (41) and plate (40) from the turbine.

  30. Remove backing plate (42) and thrust bearing (43).

  31. Remove friction disk (44).

  32. Remove lock up piston (45).

  33. Remove seal ring (46) from lock up piston (45).

  34. Use two people to remove housing (48). The weight of housing (48) is approximately 34 kg (76 lb). Remove housing (48) from flange assembly (47).

  35. Remove dowels (49), seal ring (51), and bearing (50).

  36. Remove seal rings (53) and bearing (52).

  37. Remove bearing (56).

  38. Remove pins (54). Compress retaining ring (55) and remove flange (57) from ring gear (58).

  39. Remove retainer (59) and thrust washer (60).

  41. Remove retaining ring (62) and stator assembly (63).

  42. Remove snap ring (64) and plate (65).

    Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

    Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

    Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.


  43. Remove freewheel rollers (66) and freewheel springs (67).

  44. Remove stator race (69) from stator (71).

  45. Use a suitable press and Tooling (G) to remove cam (68) from stator (71).

  46. Once cam (68) is removed, snap ring (70) can be removed.

  47. Attach Tooling (F) to converter impeller (73). The weight of converter impeller (73) is approximately 30 kg (66 lb). Remove converter impeller (73) from stator carrier (72).

  48. Remove thrust bearing (74)

  49. Remove bolts (75) and impeller hub (76).

  50. Remove converter impeller (73) from impeller adapter (77).
