3406B (PEEC) Truck Engines ( 8TC1-Up)
Reference: "Rerate Plates And 4W5140 Engine Information Plate Available For Use When Rerating 3406B (PEEC) Truck Engines", in this issue.
The Programmable Electronic Engine Control (PEEC) is now available on 3406B Truck Engines with ATAAC (Air-To-Air Aftercooling). Engines equipped with PEEC have the serial no. prefix "8TC".
The same part number plate for engine information is installed at the factory on 3406B Truck Engines with or without PEEC. This article explains what is different about the INFORMATION on the engine plate and how to use the information in service work. The information stamped on the plate for 3406B (PEEC) Truck Engines is identical to that for 3406B Engines with hydramechanical governors, with the following exceptions:
-
- 1. Performance spec
- 2. Full load static fuel
- 3. Full torque static fuel
- 4. A/F (Air/Fuel) ratio dynamic
- 1. Performance spec
Space For Performance Spec
Each 3406B (PEEC) Truck Engine can be programmed for several engine power and RPM ratings, using the same ratings personality module that is already on the engine. Each rating within the personality module has its own OT specification. Therefore, it is not possible to stamp the information plate with all the OT specs for the engine. Instead, the ratings personality module PART NUMBER is stamped in the "PERF SPEC" space on the plate.
Access to the correct OT spec for any given rating within the personality module is done by installing the 8T8697 Electronic Control Analyzer Programmer (ECAP), or the 8T5282 Digital Diagnostic Tool (DDT), and reading the appropriate screens.
Spaces For Full Load Static Fuel And Full Torque Static Fuel
No torque control group is used with PEEC as on a hydramechanically controlled engine. Maximum rack and fuel ratio rack are controlled by performance maps in the ratings personality module. The values shown in the FLS & FTS (Full Load Static Fuel and Full Torque Static Fuel) spec blocks on the plate are programmed by the factory to more closely control the engine horsepower and peak torque. These values are not measurable, but are used only by the electronic control module (ECM) for its instantaneous calculations. Therefore, these values have no units of measurement (length, volume, torque, etc.).
Field use of these values will only be necessary in two situations.
-
- 1. If the ECM is replaced. In this case, the actual values stamped on the plate will have to be programmed into the new ECM.
- 2. If the engine is rerated to a power rating that requires a personality module change. In this case, the nominal values shown in the OT microfiche for the correct OT and engine serial number range should be programmed into the ECM.
- 1. If the ECM is replaced. In this case, the actual values stamped on the plate will have to be programmed into the new ECM.
NOTE: The programming of different values is possible only when access is done through the factory Level 3 Security System. Cat dealers should call or contact Engine Division Dealer Marketing for access to this System.
The values stamped on the plate or shown in the OT microfiche apply to all engine ratings contained in the ratings personality module.
Space For Air-Fuel Ratio Dynamic
This setting is also controlled by performance maps in the ratings personality module. It is not measurable and cannot be changed. This space on the identification plate is blank.
