Introduction

This adjustment procedure is used to set the end-play in the input and output gears of the input transfer gear case.

Adjustment Procedure

Adjustment Procedure for Bearing End Play

Note: Before you assemble the components, make sure that the bearing cups are seated in the housing and in the bearing cage. Also, make sure that the bearing cones are seated against the gear shoulders. Use a 0.038 mm (.0015 inch) shim or a feeler gauge.

Note: End play for input gear (1) and output gear (9) is 0.15 mm (.006 inch) to a maximum of 0.20 mm (.008 inch).

Adjustment Procedure for the Input Gear

  1. Position housing (8) horizontally with the opening for bearing cage (4) at the top. Place input gear (1) in housing (8). Place bearing cage (4) on the housing. Do not use shims or seals.

  2. Install two bearing cage bolts (3) in bearing cage (4) at a 180 degree interval. Tighten the two bearing cage bolts finger tight. Alternately tighten each bolt by one-fourth of a turn to an equal torque. Torque for the bearing cage bolts 9 N·m (7 lb ft).

  3. Rotate input gear (1) at least three turns or rotate input gear (1) until the input gear turns freely.

  4. Again, alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt to a torque of 9 N·m (7 lb ft).

  5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until the bearing cage bolts do not move at a torque of 9 N·m (7 lb ft) and until the input gear does not turn freely after three turns.

  6. Loosen the bearing cage bolts evenly. Tighten the bearing cage bolts finger tight. Do not move any other parts.

  7. With a tapered feeler gauge, measure gap (2) that is between housing (8) and bearing cage (4) in four places. Measure the gap at each bearing cage bolt and at 90 degrees from each bearing cage bolt.

  8. Add 0.15 mm (.006 inch) to a maximum of 0.20 mm (.008 inch) to the average of the four measurements in Step 7. This is the total thickness of shims that are needed.

  9. Remove bearing cage (4).

  10. Install the shims and the O-ring. Install the bearing cage. Torque the bearing cage bolts to the proper specification.

  11. To make sure that input gear (1) turns freely, rotate input gear (1).

Adjustment Procedure for the Output Gear

  1. Position housing (8) horizontally with the opening for bearing cage (5) at the top. Place output gear (9) in housing (8). Place the bearing cage on the housing. Do not use shims or seals.

  2. Install two bearing cage bolts (6) in bearing cage (5) at a 180 degree interval. Tighten the two bearing cage bolts finger tight. Alternately tighten each bolt by one-fourth of a turn to an equal torque. Torque for the bearing cage bolts 9 N·m (7 lb ft).

  3. Rotate output gear (9) by at least three turns or rotate output gear (9) until the output gear turns freely.

  4. Again, alternately tighten each bearing cage bolt to a torque of 9 N·m (7 lb ft).

  5. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 until the bearing cage bolts do not move at a torque of 9 N·m (7 lb ft) and until the output gear does not turn freely after three turns.

  6. Loosen the bearing cage bolts evenly. Tighten the bearing cage bolts finger tight. Do not move any other parts.

  7. With a tapered feeler gauge, measure gap (7) that is between housing (8) and bearing cage (5) in four places.

  9. Remove bearing cage (5).

  10. Install the shims and the seal. Install the bearing cage. Torque the bearing cage bolts to the proper specification.

  11. To make sure that output gear (9) turns freely, rotate output gear (9).
