Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Verify that the communications adapter is communicating on both data links.
Check for active codes. Look for active codes that are related to the high pressure fuel system and the low pressure fuel system. Troubleshoot any active codes before continuing with this procedure.
Verify that the correct flash file is installed. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ECM Software - Install".
Verify that the air inlet heater is operating correctly. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Air Inlet Heater - Test".
- Check the fuel pressure during engine cranking. Check the filtered fuel pressure. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for the correct pressure values. If the fuel pressure is low, replace the fuel filters. If the fuel pressure is still low, check the fuel transfer pump.
- Cold weather adversely affects the characteristics of the fuel. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on improving the characteristics of the fuel during cold weather operation.
Check for an internal coolant leak into a cylinder and/or the exhaust. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for information on inspecting the cooling system.
