PC to UPS/SMS or MMU Graphics Master Connection

The PC to UPS/SMS or MMU Graphics Master connection is used to monitor the messages and telemetry for the overall UPS/SMS or MMU, including the Flywheel Cabinets, and retrieve log files from both the UPS/SMS, MMU and the Flywheel Cabinets. The PC to UPS/SMS or MMU Graphics Master connection is also the main port where firmware is installed to the whole UPS/SMS or MMU (paralleled systems).

The firmware updates for the UPS/SMS or MMU and Flywheel Cabinets are done from this location.

The Graphics Master connection is located in the Customer Connections Tray located on the top of the Controls cabinet.

The following instructions explain how to connect a PC serially to your UPS/SMS or MMU Graphics Master.

  1. Open the cover to the Customer Connections Tray.

  1. Connect a PC via a serial cable to the RS-232 Port that is indicated in Illustration 2.

    Note: The serial cable is a straight through DB9 male to DB9 female.

  1. Turn on the PC.

  1. Run the UPSView software.

  1. Select "PC Settings" in the Menu Bar.

  1. Click Settings in the "PC Settings" menu. The UPSView "Connection Settings" window will open.

  1. Ensure the "Direct Connect (serial)" radio button is selected.

  1. Select the "Serial/Modem Port Number" that is appropriate for the PC.

  1. Select the "Serial/Modem Baud Rate" that is desired.

    The default is 38400.

  1. Ensure that the "Detailed (MMU) Telemetry" radio button is selected.

  1. Select "Connect".

    The PC is now connected to the UPS/SMS or MMU. Text and telemetry are displayed via UPS View.

    Note: If text and telemetry are not displayed, check the "Serial/Modem Port Number" and the "Direct Connect (serial)" radio button for the proper settings. Additionally, check the cable length and type of serial cable used.

  1. Select "Log On" in the Menu Bar when connection is established. The "Enter User Name / Password" window opens.

  1. Enter a "User Name".

  1. Enter a "Password".

  1. Select "OK".

    After the "User Name" and "Password" have been accepted by the UPS/SMS or MMU, the Menu Bar includes "Op. Params", "Commands", "Calibrate", and "Log Off".

    Note: Before proceeding, wait for the new menu items to appear.

PC To Service Port In The Controls Cabinet

The PC to Service Port in the Controls cabinet connection is used to monitor telemetry and messages from just the UPS/SMS or MMU, as well as retrieve log files from both the UPS/SMS or MMU. The PC to Service Port in the Controls cabinet connection does not access the information in the Flywheel Cabinets.

The Service Port is located on Dual Network Interface board.

Note: If there are two Dual Network Interface boards that are installed on the machine, the Service Port is located on the Dual Network Interface Board that is located closer to the rear of the cabinet. Refer to Illustration 5.

Note: A Service Port Connection is required for calibration.

The following instructions explain how to connect a PC serially to your UPS/SMS or MMU Controls cabinet Dual Network Interface.

  1. Open the Control Cabinet door.

  1. Locate the Dual Network Interface Board on the right panel.

    If there are two Dual Network Interface Boards, it will be the rear one.

  1. Connect a PC via a serial cable to "J7" 10 of the Dual Network Interface board.

    Note: The serial cable is a straight through DB9 male to DB9 female.

  1. Check to make sure the jumper "JMP1" (9) on the Dual Network Interface board below the "J6" connector is set to RS-232.

  1. Turn on the PC.

  1. Run the UPS View software.

  1. Select "PC Settings" in the Menu Bar.

  1. Click Settings in the "PC Settings" menu.

    The UPS View "Connection Settings" window will open.

  1. Ensure the "Direct Connect (serial)" radio button is selected.

PC to Service Port in Flywheel Cabinet

Use this connection when telemetry, messages, and logs from only the Flywheel Cabinets are needed.

The PC to Service Port in the Flywheel Cabinet is used to monitor the status of the Flywheel Cabinets and retrieve log files from the Flywheel Cabinets. Connecting to this port will not access UPS/SMS or MMU messages, logfiles, or telemetry.

The Service Port in the Flywheel Cabinet is located on the left panel. You do not plug into this board directly but, through the RS-232 adapter above the APC-2 Board on the front upper swing-out panel.

The following instructions explain how to connect a PC serially to your UPS/SMS or MMU Flywheel Cabinet Dual Network Interface.

  1. Open Flywheel Cabinet.

  1. Ensure that green status light in Flywheel Cabinet is ON.

    The green status light indicates that the DC Disconnect Switch can be operated.

  1. Plug serial communications cable from computer with UPS View into Flywheel Cabinet serial connection at the top left of the Flywheel Cabinet.

    Note: The serial cable is a straight through DB9 male to DB9 female.

  1. Turn on the PC.

  1. Run the UPS View software.

  1. Select "PC Settings" in the Menu Bar.
