NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: Check the O-ring seals, the gaskets, and the seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and the cylinder block and all cylinder head bolt holes.

Inspect the cylinder head and the cylinder block for flatness. Refer to Guideline for Reusable Parts and Salvage Operations, SEBF8162, "Procedure to Measure and Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies and Related Components".

Install a new cylinder head gasket (30) .

Use Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device in order to install cylinder head (25) and the turbocharger. The weight of cylinder head (25) and the turbocharger is approximately 213 kg (470 lb).

Connect tube assembly (29). Install tube assembly (28) .

Install NEW bolts for all twenty-six bolts (26) and all eight bolts (27). Do NOT reuse the old bolts (26) and (27) .

Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of all twenty-six bolts (26) and all eight bolts (27) prior to assembly. Apply Tooling (B) to both sides of the washers prior to assembly.

Refer to Step 9 for the correct tightening procedure.

Tighten the cylinder head bolts according to the following procedure:
1. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 170 ± 10 N·m (125 ± 7 lb ft).
1. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) again in a numerical sequence to a torque of 170 ± 10 N·m (125 ± 7 lb ft).
1. Place a mark on Bolt (1) through Bolt (26). Rotate Bolt (1) through bolt (26) in a numerical sequence for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees (1/3 turn).
1. Loosen Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) until the washers are loose under the Bolt heads.
1. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 170 ± 10 N·m (125 ± 7 lb ft).
1. Tighten Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) again in a numerical sequence to a torque of 170 ± 10 N·m (125 ± 7 lb ft).
1. Place a mark on Bolt (1) through Bolt (26). Rotate Bolt (1) through Bolt (26) in a numerical sequence for an additional 120 ± 5 degrees (1/3 turn).
1. Tighten Bolt (27) through Bolt (34) in a numerical sequence to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).

Disconnect harness assembly (4). Loosen clamp (5) in order to Connect hose (6). Tighten clamp (5) to a torque of 11 ± 1 N·m (97 ± 9 lb in).

Install bolts (3) and bolts (2). Install tube assembly (1) .

End By:

Install the electronic unit injectors. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Electronic Unit Injector - Install".
Install the low pressure turbocharger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger - Install".
Install the valve mechanism cover base. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover Base - Remove and Install".
Install the clean gas induction valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Clean Gas Induction Valve - Install".
