Location of the Vacuum Pump

(1) Vacuum Pump

The Vacuum Pump (1) is located in the bottom left of the cabinet for the flywheel. Refer to Illustration 1. The pump (1) is used to create a vacuum in the flywheel assembly so that friction from resistance (air) is reduced. The reduction in the resistance (air) allows the flywheels to spin without the added loss of energy.

The pump (1) draws air from the bottom of the flywheel housing.

Vacuum pressure in the flywheels should be low before you begin operation. When the vacuum goes above a minimum allowable pressure, a green notice will be recorded in the log file. The flywheel will shut down if the following conditions are met:

  • The vacuum reaches the maximum allowable pressure.

  • The vacuum remains at the maximum allowable pressure for 30 minutes.

The Vacuum Pump contains oil that is used to help perform the following functions:

  • producing vacuum

  • lubricating the mechanism for the vacuum pump

Change the oil in the vacuum pump (1) annually. Oil is removed via the front drain through the hole in the frame on the bottom front of the cabinet.

NOTICE

The vacuum pump runs off 230 VAC from the output of the UPS. Do not change the voltage. Changing the voltage could damage the system and/or the vacuum pump.

Removal Procedure

Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR7654, "Internal Component Preremoval Steps (Flywheel Cabinet)" in order to shut down the system and gain access to internal components.

  1. Turn off power to the Vacuum Pump (1) by switching the power switch on the left side to the OFF position.

  1. Disconnect the Power Connector (4) from the right side of the pump (1) .

  1. Remove the intake vacuum tube (3). Remove the exhaust vacuum tube (2). The tubes connect to the top of the pump (1) .

  1. Remove the two bolts that hold the pump base frame (5) to the floor of the cabinet for the flywheel.

  1. Remove the base frame (5) from the cabinet.

Installation Procedure

  1. Verify that the power switch is set to OFF. The power switch is located on the left side of the pump near the back.

  1. Install the pump to the pump base frame (5) with four nuts.

  1. Install the pump and base frame (5) into the frame guides into the cabinet for the flywheel.

  1. Clean the intake and exhaust connector O-rings and grease the intake and exhaust connector O-rings.

  1. Install the intake vacuum tube (3) and the exhaust vacuum tube (2) to the top of the pump.

  1. Connect the Power Connector to the right side of the pump.

  1. Fill the pump with the recommended vacuum pump oil. The oil capacity for the vacuum pump is 0.5 L (0.525 qt).
