The machine ECM (44) determines the proper clutches that need to be engaged. The proper clutch engagement is based on the inputs to the machine ECM. Some of the inputs that are considered are machine speed, engine speed and operator inputs.

When the engine is started, the transmission oil pump (57) pulls oil from the sump (56). Transmission oil pump (57) sends pump oil (41) through transmission oil filter (58). Pressurized transmission oil flows from the transmission oil filter to the oil inlet in the transmission housing. The pressurized oil flows through an internal passage of the transmission housing. The oil then flows to the transmission relief valve (45). The pressurized oil flows out of the transmission relief valve and into the following modulating valves: (7), (9), (11), (13), (16) and (18).

The oil in the clutches that are not engaged is sent back to sump (56) and the oil becomes return oil (59) .

The transmission relief valve (45) controls the pressure of the pump oil (41) that is supplied to the modulating valves. The transmission relief valve (45) directs the unneeded pump oil to the torque converter (46) as torque converter oil (42). Torque converter outlet oil flows through torque converter outlet relief valve (48) to oil cooler (49) as lubrication oil (43). After the oil cools, the oil flows through the lubrication system and to the sump (56) .

Table 1 gives the combination of the clutches that are engaged for each forward and each reverse speed. There is a modulating valve for each clutch. The modulating valve directs pressurized oil to the clutch in order to engage the clutch. A solenoid is located on each modulating valve. The solenoid controls the modulating valve spool. The machine ECM controls the solenoids.

The countershaft transmission is a power shift transmission that has four forward speeds and three reverse speeds. The transmission has six clutches that are engaged hydraulically. Five of the clutches are disengaged by a coil spring. Clutch 6 (28) is disengaged by wave spring (31) and balance seal assembly (32). The balance seal assembly helps prevent the clutch from dragging if an engine overspeed condition occurs.

Balance seal assembly (32) and wave spring (31) are assembled inside the clutch piston. When clutch 6 is not engaged the force from the wave spring (31) and the pressure from the lube oil combine in order to move the clutch piston to the clutch disengaged position.

The transmission has five shafts: Input shaft assembly (3), output shaft assembly (33) and three gear shafts. Input shaft assembly (3) is driven by the torque converter turbine. Shaft assembly (9) contains clutch 1 (4) (forward low) and clutch 2 (6) (forward high). Shaft assembly (19) contains clutch 3 (23) (reverse) and clutch 4 (17) (second speed). Shaft assembly (27) contains clutch 5 (30) (third speed and fourth speed) and clutch 6 (28) (first speed).

Parking brake assembly (34) is mounted to the transmission case.

Each of the three transmission shafts that carry clutches have three internal oil passages. One passage is for carrying the oil for the lubrication and cooling of the clutches, bearings and gears. The other two passages are for carrying pressure oil for the engagement of the clutches on each shaft.

In order to transfer power through the transmission, a speed clutch and a direction clutch must be engaged.

Torque converter inlet relief valve (55) limits the torque converter inlet oil pressure in order to protect the torque converter.
