Note: Verify that all the components of the fixed axle are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.

Note: Check all the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Install Tooling (A) on both sides of the fixed axle, as shown. Position a suitable lifting device onto Tooling (A). Secure the suitable lifting device to a hoist.

  2. Position fixed axle (5) for installation. The dowels are used to align the fixed axle. The weight of the fixed axle is 13,150 kg (29,000 lb).

    NOTICE

    Always use new bolts for mounting the front axle. Failure to use new bolts may result in damage to the machine.


  3. Apply 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound to the faces of the spacers and to the threads of bolts (11). Install 20 new bolts (11), the spacers, and the nuts.

  4. Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of 1500 ± 150 N·m (1100 ± 110 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 180 ± 10 degrees in an alternating sequence.

    Note: If the front axle is being installed after servicing the differential and bevel gear, Step 5 through Step 10 must be done.

  5. Install pin (15) and cover (12) with four new bolts (11). Tighten the four bolts lightly.

  6. Use Tool (B) to measure the gap between cover (12) and the housing of the front axle.

  7. Remove cover (12) and pin (15).

  8. Add shim pack (13) accordingly to provide an end play of 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) to 0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) in the pin.

  9. Install the following components with four bolts (11): cover (12), shim pack (13), seal (14), and pin (15).

  10. Tighten four new bolts (11) to a torque of 80 ± 15 N·m (60 ± 10 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.

  11. Connect tube assembly (9) and (10) at the connection.

  12. Repeat Step 11 for the remaining tube assembly.

  13. Connect three hose assemblies (4).

    NOTICE

    Always use new bolts for the front drive shaft. Failure to use new bolts may result in damage to the drive shaft or damage to the machine.


  14. Position the front drive shaft for installation. Install four bolts (3) that connect the front drive shaft to the yoke. Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (390 ± 50 lb ft).

  15. Install bolt (8) and the washer.

  16. Position a lift truck under tire and rim (1). Use the lever puller from Tooling (A) to fasten tire and rim (1) to the lift truck. Position the tire and rim for installation.

  17. Install 61 nuts (2) and the washers.

  18. Use Tooling (C) to tighten the 61 nuts in an alternating sequence to 1300 ± 200 N·m (960 ± 140 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 90 ± 5 degrees in an alternating sequence.

  19. The tire and rim assembly can also be positioned for installation by using a tire handler, as shown.

  20. Remove Tooling (D) and the suitable stands.

  21. Install plug (6) into fixed axle (5). Fill the fixed axle with the appropriate lubricant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil Level - Check" for the correct procedure to fill the fixed axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the appropriate oil.

  22. Install plug (7) into the final drive. Fill the front axle housing and the two final drives with the appropriate lubricant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil Level - Check" for the correct procedure to fill the fixed axle. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the appropriate oil.

  23. Remove Tooling (E).

End By:

  1. Separate the frame lock link. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".

  2. Remove the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
