Note: Verify that all the components of the fixed axle are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.
Note: Check all the O-ring seals and the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
- Install Tooling (A) on both sides of the fixed axle, as shown. Position a suitable lifting device onto Tooling (A). Secure the suitable lifting device to a hoist.
- Position fixed axle (5) for installation. The dowels are used to align the fixed axle. The weight of the fixed axle is
13,150 kg (29,000 lb) .Show/hide tableIllustration 3 g00551915 Show/hide tableNOTICE Always use new bolts for mounting the front axle. Failure to use new bolts may result in damage to the machine.
- Apply 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound to the faces of the spacers and to the threads of bolts (11). Install 20 new bolts (11), the spacers, and the nuts.
- Tighten bolts (11) to a torque of
1500 ± 150 N·m (1100 ± 110 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 180 ± 10 degrees in an alternating sequence.Note: If the front axle is being installed after servicing the differential and bevel gear, Step 5 through Step 10 must be done.

- Use Tool (B) to measure the gap between cover (12) and the housing of the front axle.
- Remove cover (12) and pin (15).
- Add shim pack (13) accordingly to provide an end play of
0.03 mm (0.0012 inch) to0.08 mm (0.0031 inch) in the pin. - Install the following components with four bolts (11): cover (12), shim pack (13), seal (14), and pin (15).
- Tighten four new bolts (11) to a torque of
80 ± 15 N·m (60 ± 10 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 120 ± 5 degrees.Show/hide tableIllustration 6 g00551910 - Connect tube assembly (9) and (10) at the connection.
