Drive Shaft (Front) - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove the parking brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Parking Brake - Remove".

  1. Remove 12 bolts (1) and the washers.

  1. Remove 12 bolts (2) and the washers. Discard the bolts.

  1. Position a suitable lifting sling around drive shaft (3). Position Tool (A) on the suitable lifting sling. Secure Tool (A) to the machine above the front drive shaft, as shown.

  1. Secure the yoke on the front axle in order to prevent the yoke from falling out of the front axle when the front drive shaft is removed.

  1. Disconnect hose assembly (5) .

  1. Apply 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of Tooling (B). Install Tooling (B) into bearing cage (4), as shown.

  1. Install Tooling (C) onto bearing cage (4), as shown. Position a suitable lifting device onto Tooling (C). Secure the suitable lifting device to a hoist.

  1. Tighten Tooling (B) in order to remove bearing cage (4). remove the bearing cage. The weight of the bearing cage is 64 kg (140 lb).

  1. Use a hammer and a drift in order to remove lip seal (6) from bearing cage (4) .

  1. Remove four bolts (7) that connect front drive shaft (3) to the front axle. Discard the bolts.

  1. Remove the drive shaft. The weight of the drive shaft is 135 kg (300 lb).

  1. Remove O-ring seal (9) and shim pack (10) from seal retainer (11) .

  1. Install Tooling (D) in order to remove two ball bearings (8) and seal retainer (11) .

  1. Use a hammer and a drift in order to remove lip seal (12) from seal retainer (11) .

  1. Remove guard (13) from the shaft assembly.

  1. Remove four bolts (14) in order to remove spider and bearing assembly (15) from drive shaft (3). Discard the bolts.

Note: If any of the components of the front drive shaft are new, a new shim pack thickness will need to be calculated. Refer to Service Manual, "Bearing End Play (Drive Shaft Support) - Adjust" for the procedure to shim the drive shaft.

  1. Install guard (13) on the shaft assembly.

  1. Use Tooling (A) (not shown) in order to install lip seal (12) into seal retainer (11), as shown. Lubricate the sealing lip lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

  1. Install seal retainer (11) on the shaft assembly.

  1. Install two ball bearings (8) on the shaft assembly.

    Note: The word "thrust" will be on the inside of the bearing races. Assemble the bearings with "thrust" facing together. The bearings will be facing opposite directions.

  1. Install O-ring (9) and the required shim pack (10) .

  1. Make sure that the mating surfaces of the drive shaft and the bearing and spider assembly are clean prior to assembly. Install four bolts (14) in order to install spider and bearing assembly (15) on drive shaft (3). Tighten the four bolts to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (390 ± 50 lb ft).

    Note: Always use new bolts for mounting the spider and bearing assembly on the drive shaft.

  1. Position a suitable lifting sling around drive shaft (4). Position Tool (B) on the suitable lifting sling. Secure Tool (B) to the machine above the front drive shaft, as shown. Position the front drive shaft for installation. The weight of the drive shaft is 135 kg (300 lb).

  1. Make sure that the mating surfaces of the yoke and the bearing and spider assembly are clean prior to assembly. Install four bolts (7) that connect front drive shaft (3) to the front axle. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 530 ± 70 N·m (390 ± 50 lb ft).

    Note: Always use new bolts to mount the spider and bearing assembly to the yoke.

  1. Secure the yoke on the front axle in order to prevent the yoke from falling out of the front axle when the front drive shaft is being installed.

  1. Use Tooling (A) in order to install lip seal (6) (not shown) into bearing cage (4) .

  1. Install Tooling (C) onto bearing cage (4), as shown. Position a suitable lifting device onto Tooling (C). Secure the suitable lifting device to a hoist.

  1. Position bearing cage (4) for installation. Install the bearing cage.

  1. Connect hose assembly (5) .

  1. Install 12 bolts (2) and the washers.

  1. Install 12 bolts (1) and the washers. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 125 ± 20 N·m (90 ± 15 lb ft) and then turn each bolt by an additional 120 ± 10 degrees.

    Note: Always use new bolts to fasten the drive shaft to the bearing cage.

End By: Install the parking brake. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Parking Brake - Install".
