Electrical Connector - Inspect

Usage:

525 1DN
Intermittent electrical problems are often caused by poor connections. Use the following checks as a guide for inspecting connectors.

Check that the connectors mate properly.

  • Ensure that the locking rings are in place and locked.

  • Ensure that locking clips are used on Sure Seal connectors.

  • Ensure that the screw in the center of the connector is tight.

  • Ensure that the connector pins and sockets align properly.

Check the wires at the connector.

  • Ensure that the wires run straight into the back of the connector. Ensure that the wires do not enter the back of the connector at an angle.

  • Ensure that each wire is properly crimped into the proper connector contact.

  • Ensure that each connector contact is properly locked into the connector contact. When the connector contact is locked properly, the contact (wire) cannot be pulled out of the connector body without excessive force.

Check each wire for nicks or signs of abrasion in the insulation.

Check for moisture at the connector.

Moisture can be found at the connector due to the causes that follow.

  • The connector seals are lost or damaged.

  • Missing or loose wire hole plugs.

  • There is not a good seal between the connector and the wire insulation because the wires enter the connector at an angle.

  • Moisture travels inside the wire insulation from other connectors with poor seals.

Check for contacts that are dirty or corroded.

  • Clean the contacts with a cotton swab or a soft brush and denatured alcohol only.

Check each pin and each socket.

  • Check each contact of the connector for a snug fit by using a new pin and socket. The new contact should stay connected if the connector is held so that the contacts are upside-down.
