Removal Procedure
Start By:
- Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect".

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury. |
Note: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Use caps and plugs on all lines, hoses, and tubes in order to prevent fluid loss or contamination of the systems.
- Open the engine hood. The transmission oil cooler is located on the right side of the machine.
- Drain the radiator. The capacity of the cooling system is 43 L (11.4 US gal).
- Remove drain plug (5) from the front bonnet of the transmission oil cooler. After draining the system, replace drain plug (5) .

- Remove plug (7). Drain the oil from the transmission oil cooler. After draining the system, replace the plug (7) .
- Disconnect tube assembly (2). Disconnect hose (3) .
- Remove bolt (1) in order to release the hose. Remove bolt (6) .
- Remove four bolts (4) .
- Remove four bolts (8) which hold the tube assembly in place. Remove four bolts (9) which hold the tube assembly in place.

- Remove four bolts (10) which hold the transmission oil filter in place.
- Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling. Remove the transmission oil cooler (11). The weight of the transmission oil cooler is 30 kg (65 lb).

- Remove the front bonnet (12) and the rear bonnet (13) from the transmission oil cooler (11) .
- Clean the transmission oil cooler with a rod of 4 mm (.16 inch) diameter.
