如果发动机数周未起动过，润滑油将从缸壁和活塞环中流掉。 缸套表面可能生锈。 缸套表面锈蚀将导致发动机磨损加剧和发动机使用寿命的降低。
为防止发动机过度磨损，遵守下列准则：
- 完成在本操作和保养手册, "保养周期表"(保养部分)列出的全部润滑建议。
- 如果预计发动机会在冰冻温度下运行，检查冷却系统是否具备足够的防冻保护。 参见专门出版物, SEBU6385, "卡特彼勒公路用卡车柴油发动机用液建议"。
如果发动机无法运行，或者还没有计划使用发动机，应采取特殊的预防措施。 如果发动机贮存超过一个月，建议制订一个完整的防护程序。
