Installation Of 4W4585 Sand Blast Grid Assembly{1353, 7155} Caterpillar

Installation Of 4W4585 Sand Blast Grid Assembly{1353, 7155}

Usage:

D8L ( 53Y)

4W4585 Sand Blast Grid Assembly can be installed on the above machines to increase the service life of the radiator cores. In certain areas where sand particles are lifted up and forced through the radiator core, the service life is decreased when the sand particles cause erosion of the tubes in the radiator core, which then causes coolant leaks. To install the sand blast grid assembly, see the instructions that follow together with the parts list on page 5 and the Service Manual.

Fabricated Parts

1 Make four brackets (1), as shown, from 3.0 mm (0.12") thick low carbon steel.

2 Weld two 9F2978 Weld Nuts (2) on each bracket (1).

3 Make four brackets (3), as shown, from 3.0 mm (0.12") thick low carbon steel.

4 Make four bar assemblies (4), as shown, from 5.0 × 25.0 mm (0.20" × 0.98") bar stock. Tack weld the pieces along edges (A).

5 Make two spacer bars (5) and two spacer ends (6) from 25.4 × 25.4 mm (1.00" × 1.00") low carbon steel box beam material. Notch and bend the spacer ends, as shown, and tack weld the inside edges. Tack weld bar assemblies (4) to spacer bars (5). Do not put weld material on the top and bottom surfaces.

Assembly Of Sand Blast Grid

1 Remove the hood, muffler, dust ejector and fan. Tilt the radiator guard forward. See the Service Manual.

2 Remove shield assembly (1) from the radiator group.

3 Remove the ten center bolts that hold each 7N4477 Angle Assembly (2) to the radiator core. Put four brackets (3) [see Step 1, page 2] in position on the angle assemblies and install five S1571 Bolts (4) and five 5M2894 Washers for each bracket. The lower right hand corner of the radiator group is shown.

4 Put 4W4585 Grid Assembly (5) in position on brackets (3). Use eight T102 Bolts (6) and eight 5M2894 Washers to fasten it to the brackets.

5 Fasten four brackets (7) [see Step 3, page 3] to the side attachments of grid assembly (5) with S509 Bolts (8) and 5M2894 Washers. Use a center punch to make a mark on 2W1072 Channel Assemblies (9) at each hole (C). Remove grid assembly (5) from brackets (3). Drill a 10.5 mmØ (0.41"Ø) hole through channels (9) at each punch mark location. Make hole (C) in each bracket (7) larger to 10.5 mmØ (0.41"Ø).

6 Use two 3/8" UNC guide pins to position each spacer bar (10) [see Step 5, page 4] and each spacer end (11) on the radiator group (use the shield assembly bolt holes). Use a center punch to make a mark at location (E) on bar assembly (12), at each corner. Drill a 9.5 mmØ (0.37"Ø) diameter hole through the bar assembly and the spacer, as shown. Remove the guide pins.

NOTE: 3/8" UNC bolts, 32.0 mm (1.25") long, can be used instead of the guide pins to hold the spacers in place while the holes are drilled.

7 Fasten the spacers together at each location (E) with a 2B2694 Bolt, two 9M1974 Washers and a 1D4716 Nut. Fasten the grid assembly back in position with the T102 Bolts and 5M2894 Washers used in Step 4. Use four S1594 Bolts, four 5M2894 Washers and four 1D4717 Nuts to fasten brackets (7) to channel assemblies (9).

8 Put the shield assembly back on the radiator group with the spacer between the radiator group and the shield assembly. Install eight 1C2251 Bolts (13), eight S1590 Bolts (14), four L2070 Bolts (15) and four L1143 Bolts (16). Use the former washers with the new bolts.

9 Tilt the radiator guard back in position and fasten it in position. See the Service Manual.

10 Install the lower fan guards.

11 Before installation of the fan, two spacers must be installed to prevent contact between the fan and the sand blast grid. Remove the fan from the 7N2851 Plate. Remove the plate from the fan adapter. Do not remove the fan from the fan adapter.

12 Put 7S6754 Spacer (17) and 3R3821 Spacer (18) in position over fan adapter (19). Install plate (20) on the fan adapter with the former bolts and washers. Put fan (21) in position and install eight 1C2251 Bolts (22) and eight 5M2894 Washers (23).

13 Install the upper fan guard or air conditioner condenser, dust ejector, muffler and the hood; see the Service Manual. Be sure all bolts are tight and that the fan does not make contact with other components.

14 Fill the cooling system; see the Service Manual.

15 With the fuel rack in the shut off position, turn the engine over several times to see if there is any contact between components. If no contact exists, the engine can be started.
