Usage:

Installation of the idler guards will help keep debris from getting between the track roller frame and the front idler. When debris gets in this area it can cause damage to the recoil assembly and the front idler. To install the idler guards it is necessary to make some modifications to each machine as given in the following instructions.
Modification Of Idler Guards
(1) To install the idler guards on the above machines if the front of each roller frame rail has not been modified as shown in Service Magazine article dated May 23, 1983, modification to the guards must be made as follows.
(2) Remove section (A) from each guard as shown for clearance of the roller frame rails.
Installation Of Guard Groups (943-953) - All
(1) Remove four guards (1) [two each side]. These are not needed again. Keep the bolts and washers.
NOTE: Some 953 machines were equipped with guards (2); these guards are also not needed.
(2) For 943 only, drill four 11 mmØ (.43"Ø) holes (A) in each roller frame. Make threads with a 1/2-13 tap (see note). Install two 3W2741 Plates (3) [each roller frame] with a 5 mm (.20") fillet weld from location (B) to (C) as shown.
NOTE: On later machines 31Y1339-up and 4Z312-up holes (A) have 102615 Setscrews installed to keep out debris. It is not necessary to make this modification; however, remove the setscrews before doing step 3.
(3) Install 3W2631 Guard Assembly (4) with former bolts and washers. Install 3W2626 Guard Assembly (5), 3W2623 Guard Assembly (6) and 3W2629 Guard Assembly (7). Use six 2H3855 Bolts and 5P1076 Washers at locations (D) and four S1595 Bolts and 5P1076 Washers at locations (E) [each roller frame].
(4) For 953 only, drill four 11 mmØ (.43"Ø) holes (F) in each roller frame. Make threads with a 1/2-13 tap (see note). Install two 3W2741 Plates (8) [each roller frame] with a 5 mm (.20") fillet weld from locations (G) to (H) as shown.
NOTE: On later machines 76Y1146-up and 5Z386-up holes (F) have 102615 Setscrews installed to keep out debris. It is not necessary to make this modification; however remove the setscrews before doing step 5.
(5) Install 3W2752 Guard Assembly (9) with former bolts and washers. Install 3W2747 Guard Assembly (10), 3W2744 Guard Assembly (11) and 3W2750 Guard Assembly (12). Use six 2H3855 Bolts and 5P1076 Washers at locations (J) and four S1595 Bolts and 5P1076 Washers at locations (E) [each roller frame].
Installation Of Guard Groups (963-973) - All
NOTE: The existing idler yoke can be modified as shown in the following instructions or new idler yokes are available from the Parts Department.
(1) For 963 only, remove the idler yokes from the machine (see the Service Manual). Drill two 11 mmØ (.43"Ø) holes (A), and machine surfaces (B) as shown. Make threads with a 1/2-13 tap in holes (A). Drill two 11 mmØ (.43"Ø) holes (C) 32 mm (1.26") in depth, and make a 42.86 ± 0.80 mmØ (1.69" ± .03"Ø) spotface at locations (D) as shown.
(2) For 973 only, remove the idler yokes from the machine (see the Service Manual). Drill two 13.8 mmØ (.54"Ø) holes (E), and machine surfaces (F) as shown. Make threads with a 5/8-11 tap in holes (E). Drill two 13.8 mmØ (.54"Ø) holes (G) 41 mm (1.6") in depth, and make a 50.8 ± 0.8 mmØ (2.0" ± .03"Ø) spotface at locations (H) as shown.
(3) Drill six 11 mmØ (.43"Ø) holes (J) [each roller frame] and make threads with a 1/2-13 tap (see note below). Install two lugs (1) [each roller frame] with a 5 mm (.20") fillet weld from locations (K) to (L) as shown.
NOTE: On later machines 6Z1126-up, 11Z281-up, 26Z187-up and 32Z567-up, holes (J) have 102615 Setscrews installed to keep out debris. It is not necessary to make this modification; however, remove the setscrews before doing step 4 or 5.
(4) For 963 only, install modified idler yoke (2) [or a new 3W2891 Yoke] (see the Service Manual). Install 8G9577 Guard Assembly (3) with two S1573 Bolts (4), two 9S1366 Bolts (5) and 5P8245 Washers. Install 3W2888 Guard Assembly (6) and 3W2885 Guard Assembly (7) with eight 2H3855 Bolts (8), two 7B3235 Bolts (9), two 9P9770 Plates (10) and 5P1076 Washers.
(5) For 973 only, install modified idler yoke (11) [or 3W827 Yoke] (see the Service Manual). Install 8G9790 Guard Assembly (12) with two L1169 Bolts (13), two S1625 Bolts (14) and 5P8247 Washers. Install 3W2758 Guard Assembly (15) and 3W2761 Guard Assembly (16) with eight S1621 Bolts (17), two 7B3235 Bolts (18), two 9P9770 Plates (19), and 5P1076 Washers.
