Usage:
start by:
a) remove valve lifters
b) remove timing gear cover
1. Turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the crankshaft gear is in alignment with the timing mark on the camshaft gear.
TYPICAL EXAMPLE
NOTE: To keep the engine timing correct during removal and installation of the camshaft, put a mark on the teeth of the fuel injection pump drive gear and idler gear at location (A). Put a mark on the teeth of the idler gear and camshaft gear at location (B). The engine timing will be correct when the marks at locations (A) and (B) are in alignment and the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft gears are in alignment.
2. Remove bolts (1) that hold the camshaft gear to the camshaft. Remove the camshaft gear.
TYPICAL EXAMPLE
3. Remove the bolts, lock and thrust washer that hold the camshaft in place. Install a 3/8"-16 NC forged eyebolt in the end of the camshaft and remove camshaft (2) from the engine.
Install Camshaft
TYPICAL EXAMPLE
1. Put clean engine oil on the cams and bearing journals of the camshaft. Install camshaft (2) in the block.
2. Install thrust washer (1), lock and bolts that hold the camshaft in place.
TYPICAL EXAMPLE
3. Put camshaft gear (3) in position on the camshaft so the timing mark on the camshaft gear is in alignment with the timing mark on the crankshaft gear. Install the washers and bolts that hold the camshaft gear in place.
NOTE: If the bolts can not be installed in the end of the camshaft, remove the camshaft gear. Turn the camshaft as needed and install the camshaft gear again. If a replacement has been made for any of the four above timing gears, it will be necessary to check the engine timing to make sure the timing is correct. See INSTALL FUEL INJECTION PUMP HOUSING AND GOVERNOR.
