The balancer gears and the crankshaft gears have two alignment marks that are stamped onto the surface of each gear. During installation of the gears, the marks must be aligned.

When you install the balancer gear onto the rear of the engine, select the alignment mark that is appropriate for the engine's direction of rotation. Align the mark on the balancer gear with the "REAR" alignment mark on the crankshaft gear. Refer to Illustration 1.

When you install the balancer gear onto the front of the engine, select the alignment mark that is appropriate for the engine's direction of rotation. Align the mark on the balancer gear with the "FRONT" alignment mark on the crankshaft gear. Refer to Illustration 2.
