The following changes are adaptable to the products within the listed serial numbers, and are effective with all products after the listed serial numbers.
A new dust seal may be installed when service is performed on the swing gear and bearing. Several dust seals are available for replacement. Compare the cross section of the former seal with the cross section of a new seal.
Note: Do not substitute seals. The cross section of the new seal must be identical to the cross section of the seal that is removed.
Illustrations 2,4, and 5 show the cross sections of the dust seals.
The procedure for the replacement of the dust seal depends on the series of the machine and the model. Use the procedure that is appropriate for the seal in your machine.
Procedure for the Installation of a
Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual for your machine. Perform the procedure to disassemble the undercarriage frame assembly from the swing gear and bearing.
- Identify the location of the leak. The grease can leak from the inner dust seal (A) and from the outer dust seal (B). Illustration 1 shows the location of the dust seals and the correct names.
- Remove the damaged dust seal from the swing bearing. Clean all of the dirt and foreign material from the seal groove. Wash the seal groove with a suitable solvent that will not leave an oily residue.

Use For 345B Series II, 365B, 385B, And 300C Excavators - Confirm the shape of the dust seal before any installation is started. The dust seal is available in three different shapes. Illustrations 2,4, and 5 show the cross sections of the dust seals.
Note: The 148-4685 Seal and the vulcanized seals that are listed in Table 1 have an identical cross section. The 148-4685 Seal is cut to length from bulk material. The vulcanized seal is a one-piece seal. The 148-4685 Seal is used for the outer dust seal in the inner bearing race. The vulcanized seal is used for the inner dust seal in the outer bearing race.
- The installation of a new dust seal should be completed at minimum ambient temperature of
10 °C (50 °F) or higher. - Use isopropyl alcohol or other approved agents on the seal groove in order to lubricate the seal during assembly. Use a wooden driver that has a spherical point in order to install the dust seal in the seal groove of the swing bearing.

- Install the new inner dust seal in the seal groove in the outer bearing race of the swing bearing.

Installation of a
Note: Perform Step 1 through Step 5 of "Procedure for the Installation of a
- Cut one end of inner dust (B) seal at a 90 degree angle.
- Install the new outer dust seal in the seal groove in the inner bearing race of the swing bearing.
- Bond the ends of the new seal before the installation is completed. Use 152-9155 Adhesive in order to bond the two ends of the dust seal. Install the bonded portion in the seal groove.
- Apply the adhesive on one end of the seal. Hold the seal in your hands and bond the ends together. Maintain contact between the two ends for a minimum of 15 seconds.
Note: Make sure that the ends of the seal are accurately bonded and securely bonded.
- Refer to Illustration 3. Use the sequence that is described in Step 2 for the installation of the seal.
- Follow the procedure in Steps 1 through 5 to install outer dust seal (4) in the swing gear and bearing. Refer to Illustration 1 for proper seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.

150 mm (6.0 inch) length from both ends. Bond the ends of the seal. - Apply the adhesive on one end of the seal and hold the seal in your hands and bond the ends together. Maintain contact between the two ends for a minimum of 15 seconds.
Note: Make sure that the ends are accurately bonded and securely bonded before installing the seal.
- Make sure that the seal is completely installed in the seal groove.
- Follow the procedure in Steps 1 through 4 to install outer dust seal (4) in the swing gear and bearing. Refer to Illustration 1 for proper seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.

50.8 mm (2.00 inch) from the cut end of the seal. Apply 152-9155 Adhesive to the seal in152.4 mm (6.00 inch) increments. - Immediately use a blunt tool in order to install only the bonded portion of the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Make sure that the dust seal is seated properly in the seal groove.
- Install the seal so that the lip of the seal is facing in the direction that is shown. Refer to Illustration 1.
- To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the bearing, run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing.
- Apply 152-9155 Adhesive to the next
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the seal. Immediately use a blunt tool in order to install only the bonded portion of the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. - Make sure that the inner dust seal is seated properly in the seal groove. To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the bearing, run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing.
- Repeat Steps 6 and 7 until the entire length of the inner dust seal is installed. Do not install the last
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the inner dust seal. - Measure the inner dust seal and cut the remaining end of inner dust seal (3) at a 90 degree angle. Install the last
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of seal in the seal groove dry. - Make sure that the inner dust seal is properly seated in the seal groove and that there is no gap between the seal ends. Carefully remove both loose ends of the inner dust seal out of the seal groove.
- Apply 152-9155 Adhesive to the loose ends of the seal.
- Immediately use a blunt tool in order to reinstall the seal ends in the seal groove. Again, make sure that the inner dust seal is properly seated in the seal groove, and that no gap existed between the ends of the seal.
- To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the top of the bearing, run a dull putty knife around the seal.
- Follow the procedure in Steps 1 through 13 to install outer dust seal (4) in the swing gear and bearing. Refer to Illustration 1 for proper seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.
Installation of Replacement Dust Seals
For Dry Installation:
- Thoroughly clean all dirt and foreign material from the dust seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing with a wire brush.
- Wash the dust seal grooves with a suitable solvent that will not leave an oily residue.
- Make sure the dust seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing are thoroughly clean and dry prior to installation of the dust seals.
- Cut one end of inner dust seal (A) at a 90 degree angle. Using a blunt tool, install the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. The lip of the seal should be positioned so it is facing in as shown in Illustration 1. After the inner dust seal is completely installed in the seal groove, measure and cut the remaining end of the inner dust seal at a 90 degree angle. Install the remaining end of the inner dust seal in the seal groove. Make sure that the inner dust seal is seated properly in the seal groove all the way around the swing gear and bearing. Also, make sure that there is no gap between the ends of the inner dust seal.
- Pull each end of the inner dust seal out of the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing approximately
50.8 mm (2.00 inch) . Apply Loctite 380 "Black Max" to each end of the inner dust seal to bond them together. Immediately reinstall the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Again, make sure the entire inner dust seal is properly seated in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing and that no gap exists between the ends of the inner dust seal. To ensure that the lip of inner dust seal has not adhered to the top of the seal and the bearing at the seal joint. - Follow the procedure in Step 1 through Step 6 to install outer dust seal (B) in the swing gear and bearing. Refer to Illustration 1 for proper seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.
For Bonded Installation:
- Thoroughly clean all dirt and foreign material from the dust seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing with a wire brush.
- Wash the dust seal grooves with a suitable solvent that will not leave an oily residue.
- Make sure the dust seal grooves in the swing gear and bearing are thoroughly clean and dry prior to installation of the dust seals.
- Cut one end of inner dust seal (A) at a 90 degree angle. Apply 152-9155 Adhesive Loctite 380 "Black Max" on the first
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of the seal starting approximately50.8 mm (2.00 inch) in from the cut end. Using a blunt tool immediately install only the bonded portion of the inner dust seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Make sure the dust seal is seated properly in the seal groove and that the lip of the seal is facing in as shown in Illustration 1. To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the bearing, run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing. - Apply Loctite 380 "Black Max" to the next
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of seal. Using a blunt tool immediately install only the bonded portion of the inner seal in the seal groove of the swing gear and bearing. Make sure the inner dust seal is seated properly in the seal groove. To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the bearing, run a dull putty knife between the lip of the seal and the bearing. - Repeat the procedure in Step 5 until the entire length of the inner dust seal, with the exception of the last
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) is installed in the seal groove. - Measure and cut the remaining end of the inner dust seal (A) at a 90 degree angle. Install the last
152.4 mm (6.00 inch) of seal in the seal groove dry. Make sure the inner dust seal is properly seated in the seal groove and that there is no gap between the seal ends. Carefully remove both loose ends of the inner dust seal out of the seal groove. Apply Loctite 380 "Black Max" to the loose ends of the seal, including the butt joint. Using a blunt tool immediately reinstall the seal ends in the seal groove. Again, make sure the inner dust seal is properly seated in the seal groove, and that no gap exists between the ends of the seal. To ensure that the inner dust seal has not adhered to the top of the bearing, run a dull putty knife around the seal. - Follow the procedure in Step 1 through Step 8 to install outer dust seal (B) in the swing gear and bearing. Refer to Illustration 1 for proper seal orientation in the swing gear and bearing.
