Plates Can Be Fabricated For Removal Of Spherical Bearings From Hydraulic Cylinders{0651,0623}

Usage:

Spherical bearings are used in excavator boom, stick, and bucket cylinders and in track-type tractor bulldozer tilt cylinders.

These bearings have a center "ball" which extends beyond the bearing race on each side. During bearing removal or installation, if force is used only against the "ball" it pushes the race tighter against the inside of the bore. Puller plates can be fabricated to use in the removal of these bearings. The design of these plates permits all the force to be used against the bearing race. In some applications these plates push against a grease seal and the seal pushes against the bearing. Illustration 1 shows a typical bearing removal application. The dimensions needed to make most of the plates are shown in the chart along with the part number of the bearing they are to be used on. The part number of the bearing can be found in the parts book for that machine. The plates can be made from SAE1020 steel according to Illustration 2. It is not necessary to heat treat the plates.

It is necessary to make two spacer blocks for the removal of the bearings. These spacer blocks can be fabricated from steel according to Illustration 3. The spacer blocks can be used in different positions for different applications.

Illustration 3. Dimensions to fabricate blocks.

If the part number for the bearing is not in the chart, you can use the dimensions that follow to make a puller plate:

1. The diameter of the hole in the center of the plate is 25.4 mm (1.00").
2. Diameter A is 1.5 mm (.06") smaller than the diameter of the "bore" of the bearing to be removed.
3. Diameter B is 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm (.06" to .12") larger than the outside diameter of the "ball".
4. Diameter C is 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm (.06" to .12") smaller than the outside diameter of the outside race.
5. Diameter D is 19.0 to 28.4 mm (.75" to 1.12").
6. Dimension E is 0.8 mm (.03") more than the distance that the "ball" extends beyond the outside of the bearing race.
7. Dimension F must be small enough to permit diameter A to be used as a pilot (guide) in the bore of the ball.

The other tools needed for removal or installation of the bearings are: 1P820 Hydraulic Puller Group, 2J3507 Nut, 3K5234 Washer, and a hydraulic pump.
