The correct dimension is 35.05 ± 0.50 mm (1.380 ± 0.020").

SERVICE MAGAZINE, AUGUST 17, 1981, PAGE 2. In the article, "New Spanner Wrenches Needed To Install Bearings On Marine Transmission Shafts", there are some dimensions that are wrong in Illustrations 2 and 3. In Illustration 2 the length of the spacer must be 171.45 ± 0.50 mm (6.750 ± 0.020") and the outside diameter must be 88.9 ± 0.9 mm (3.50 ± 0.04"). In Illustration 3 the diameter of the hole in the plate must be 35.5 ± 0.50 mm (1.380 ± 0.020"). Also, the 152.4 ± 0.5 mm (6.00 ± 0.02") and the 139.70 ± 0.25 mm (5.500 ± .010") were not shown originally.

Four new spanner wrenches and four new fabricated tools are needed for service of the ahead and astern shafts in 7231 and 7241 Marine Transmissions. The new tools are 6V3132, 6V3133, 6V3134 and 6V3135 Spanner Wrenches; FT1506 Plate and FT1508, FT1510 and FT1512 Spacers.

The bearing installation procedures follow. The tools needed are shown in the chart.

1. Assemble the Ahead Clutch Shaft with roller bearing and transfer gear according to the Service Manual.

2. Install 7H7539 Nut, 4K684 Washer, FT1506 Plate (with the step toward the shaft), the tapered bearings, FT1508 Spacer (with the counterbore toward the bearings), 5P2998 Hydraulic Puller, 4K684 Washer, 3K9770 Nut, and 9S5558 Stud on the Ahead Clutch Shaft as shown.

3. Push the bearings onto the shaft until they make contact with the transfer gear.

4. Remove the tooling and install the spanner nut.

5. Use 6V3132 Spanner Wrench (6V3134 Spanner Wrench) to tighten the nut to a minimum torque of 680 N·m (500 lb ft).

6. Assemble the Astern Drive Shaft with the Ahead Clutch Shaft Assembly and transfer gear according to the Service Manual.

7. Assemble two 9S5558 Studs together with 5P8623 Coupler.

8. Install 3K9770 Nut, 4K684 Washer, FT1506 Plate (with the step toward the shaft), the tapered bearings, FT1512 Spacer (with the counterbore toward the bearings), 5P2998 Hydraulic Puller; 4K684 Washer, and 9S5558 Stud Assembly on the shaft assembly as shown.

9. Push the bearings onto the shaft until they make contact with the transfer gear.

10. Remove the tools and install the spanner nut.

11. Use 6V3135 Spanner Wrench (6V3133 Spanner Wrench) to tighten the nut to a minimum torque of 680 N·m (500 lb ft).
