Assembly Procedure

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Clean the heat exchanger and inspect the heat exchanger.

  1. Examine the heat exchanger for signs of leakage, cracks, corrosion, damaged tubes or hose connections. If the tube bundle is damaged, the tube bundle should be replaced. Check the sealing face of the end caps. If there is corrosion on the body of the heat exchanger in the area of O-ring seals, replace the body of the heat exchanger.

  1. Clean the components of the heat exchanger in an approved cleaning fluid.

  1. If there is a restriction in the tubes of the tube bundle, the tubes can be cleaned with a 4.00 mm (0.157 inch) rod. Push the rod carefully in the opposite direction to the flow of sea water. Continue this operation until all of the tubes are clean.

    Typical example

  1. Insert tube bundle (5) into the body of heat exchanger (4) .

  1. Ensure that the tube bundle is centered in the body of the heat exchanger.

  1. Apply a waterproof grease to the O-ring seals and to the grooves of the end caps. Install O-ring seals onto the end caps.

    Typical example

  1. Place end cap (3) onto the body of the heat exchanger. Align the mark on the end cap (1) with the mark on the body of the heat exchanger.

  1. Install six bolts (2) and tighten to a torque of 7 N·m (62 lb in).

  1. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 in order to install the end cap on the reverse end.

  1. Test the heat exchanger for leaks. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Heat Exchanger - Test" for more information.
