Removal Procedure
Start By:
- In order to gain access to the engine oil cooler, it may be necessary to remove the heat exchanger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Heat Exchanger - Remove" for more information.
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note:
- Drain the coolant from the engine oil cooler into a suitable container. Drain the engine oil from the engine oil cooler into a suitable container. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the procedure on draining the engine coolant and the engine oil.

Installation Procedure
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
- If the studs were removed, then apply 4C-4030 Thread Lock Compound to the threads of the studs. Install the studs into the cylinder block.

- Clean the mating surfaces of oil cooler cover (1) and the cylinder block. Use 3S-6252 Sealant on the mating surfaces of the cover for the engine oil cooler and the cylinder block.
- Position engine oil cooler (1) and the new gasket on the cylinder block. The baffle on the engine oil cooler should face the front of the engine. Install nuts (4) and bolts (3) and tighten to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
- Install the manual sump pump for the engine oil. Install bolts (7) and spacers (8) that secure manual sump pump (6) to the engine oil cooler.

- Install new gaskets on the flanges of the oil lines (5). Install the oil lines and tighten the nuts to a torque of 22 N·m (16 lb ft).
- Fill the radiator with coolant. Check the level of the engine oil. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for exact capacities of the engine.
- Start the engine. Check for coolant leaks and for oil leaks.
End By: If the heat exchanger was removed, install the heat exchanger. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Heat Exchanger - Install" for further information.
