A grease lubricated track is currently installed on certain Excavators. The improved track link assemblies provide an extended wear life. The link assemblies are also more quiet than the former dry sealed link assemblies. The improved link assemblies require lubrication of the master joint during reassembly after the master joint has been disassembled. Use the information that follows in order to lubricate the master joint during reassembly.
Lubrication of the Master Joint
The GLT 4 track is a grease lubricated track that utilizes the same design for the seal as the Track-Type Tractors. The design of the master pin allows the assembly process and service personnel to apply grease after the assembly of the track. The process eliminates grease from the end of the pin. Grease on the end of a pin is a common cause of pin walking.

Orientation of the crosshole (A) Side for the shoe (B) Side for the rail (C) Crosshole (D) 20° (E) Mark for the orientation of the crosshole |
Position the master pin so that crossholes are oriented parallel to the side for the rail and the side for the track shoe. The orientation is different from the orientation for the pin on a Track-Type Tractor. The orientation locates the crossholes in an area with low stress during operation in the field in order to prevent breaking. Refer to Illustration 1.
Note: A mark on the end of the pin determines the position of the crosshole.

Tool for greasing the master link (F) 254-8168 Grease Pin Kit |
Apply 161-9203 Grease Cartridge in the master pin. Use the 254-8168 Grease Pin Kit. Refer to Illustration 2.
Note: The tool is designed to allow the grease to exit the drain hole when the cavity is full.

Stopper in the master link (G) 7G-4332 Stopper |
Remove the tool after the joint is filled with grease. Push a 6Y-0473 Clear Plug in a 7G-4332 Stopper and install the assembly in the master pin. Use a 5P-1725 Installation Tool in order to install the assembly. Refer to Illustration 3.
Refer to Table 1 for the GLT 4 link assembly and use of the grease kit.
