Start By:

  1. Remove the swing drive. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Swing Drive - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Position the swing drive on wood blocks, as shown. The weight of the swing drive is approximately 310 kg (683 lb).

  1. Drain the oil from the swing drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the swing drive is 10 L (3 US gal).

  1. Put an alignment mark on the cover and the housing of the swing drive for assembly purposes.

  1. Remove bolts (1) and cover (2) .

  1. Fasten Tooling (A) to cover (2) .

  1. Fasten a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A), as shown. Carefully remove cover (2) from the ring gear of the swing drive.

  1. Use two people in order to remove carrier assembly (3). The weight of the carrier assembly is approximately 23 kg (50 lb).

  1. Use the following procedure to disassemble carrier assembly (3) .

    1. Remove sun gear (4) from carrier assembly (3) .

    1. Drive spring pin (6) into planetary shaft (5) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Remove planetary shaft (5), thrust washers (9), and planetary gear (7) from the carrier assembly.

    1. Remove bearing (8) from planetary gear (7) .

    1. Remove spring pin (6) from planetary shaft (5) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Repeat Steps 8.a through 8.e in order to remove the other three planetary gears from the carrier assembly.

    1. Remove retaining ring (10) with a screwdriver. Remove gear (11) from carrier assembly (3) .

    1. Remove retaining ring (12) from gear (11) .

  1. Remove retaining ring (15) that holds carrier assembly (13) in position.

  1. Remove spacer (14) from carrier assembly (13) .

  1. Slide a piece of steel bar stock between the planetary gears in carrier assembly (13), as shown. Make sure that the steel bar stock is centered in the carrier assembly. Fasten a suitable lifting device to the steel bar stock, as shown. Slowly lift carrier assembly (13) from the swing drive housing. The weight of carrier assembly (13) is approximately 39 kg (86 lb).

  1. Use the following procedure to disassemble carrier assembly (13) .

    1. Drive spring pin (16) into planetary shaft (17) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Remove planetary shaft (17), thrust washers (20), and planetary gear (18) from the carrier assembly.

    1. Remove bearings (19) from planetary gear (18) .

    1. Remove spring pin (16) from planetary shaft (17) with a hammer and a punch.

    1. Repeat Steps 12.a through 12.d in order to remove the other three planetary gears from the carrier assembly.

  1. Use two people in order to remove ring gear (21) from the swing drive housing. The weight of the ring gear is approximately 47 kg (104 lb).

  1. Use Tooling (B) to remove retaining ring (22) .

  1. Put swing drive housing (25) in a press. The combined weight of the swing drive housing, the pinion shaft, and the bearing cage is approximately 151 kg (333 lb).

    Note: Use care when components are pushed from the swing drive housing. Avoid injury to personnel. Also, avoid damage to components.

  1. Push pinion shaft (23) from the swing drive housing. The weight of pinion shaft (23) is approximately 50 kg (110 lb).

  1. Remove the swing drive housing and the pinion shaft from the press. The weight of the swing drive housing is approximately 95 kg (209 lb).

  1. Place swing drive housing (26) sideways. Remove the bolts (24) from the swing drive. Remove bearing cage (25) from the swing drive.

  1. Remove two lip type seals (27) and O-ring seal (28) from bearing cage (25) .

    Note: Use care when the components are pushed from the swing drive housing. Avoid injury to personnel. Also, avoid damage to components.

  1. Place swing drive (26) in a press. Use Tooling (D) to push bearing (29), spacer (30), and bearing (31) from the swing drive.
