Note: For more detailed information, see the Owner's Manual, SEBU7134, "3600 Diesel Marine Monitoring System".
The Marine Monitoring System is controlled by a programmable logic control. The system uses a microprocessor to provide engine control and engine monitoring. The system enables an operator to use a display screen for controlling and for monitoring engine operation.
When the package for annunciation is included, the operator is alerted to conditions that can cause alarms and shutdowns. The Marine Monitoring System can stop the engine if the engine operation reaches a setpoint that is programmed for shutdown. However, the system can be overridden in order to avoid a shutdown.

Note: The "ENGINE SPEED" gauge, "STARTING AIR PRESSURE" gauge, and "ENGINE HOURS" meter are provided as a backup to the monitoring system. The gauges may be used for basic engine operation that is independent of the programmable logic control and the display screen. Also, the switches and the "EMERGENCY STOP" button on the control panel operate independently, if necessary. However, power must be supplied to the control panel in order for the components to operate.
The control panel requires a 24 volt DC power source. The system activates this self test when the power is supplied: flashing of the indicators, movement of the gauge needles and annunciation of the alarm (if equipped). The duration of the self test is approximately three seconds.
"ENGINE SPEED" gauge (tachometer) (1) - This gauge indicates the engine rpm. The signal for this gauge is provided by a magnetic pickup that is mounted in the flywheel housing.
"STARTING AIR PRESSURE" gauge (2) - This gauge indicates the air supply pressure for the starting motor and the shutoffs.
"ENGINE HOURS" meter (3) - This meter indicates the total hours of engine operation. The signal for this meter is provided by the Engine Speed Switch. This meter is used for scheduling engine maintenance. Do not use the hour meter from the programmable logic control for scheduling maintenance.
"SUMMARY SHUTDOWN" indicator (4) - This red indicator illuminates for an engine shutdown. A flashing light indicates a shutdown that is not acknowledged. A continuous light indicates that the shutdown has been acknowledged. The cause of the shutdown is provided by the display screen. To acknowledge the indicator, turn the "ACKN and LAMP TEST" switch to the "ACKN" position. Correct the condition before restarting the engine. The control panel must be reset before the engine can be restarted. To reset the control panel, turn the "OFF/RESET, LOCAL, and REMOTE" switch to the "OFF/RESET" position. The air shutoff is activated for any shutdown. The air shutoff must also be reset before the engine can be restarted. If an overspeed shutdown occurs, the Engine Speed Switch must also be reset.
"SUMMARY ALARM" indicator (5) - This red indicator illuminates for an alarm condition. Flashing indicates that an alarm has not been acknowledged. Continuous illumination indicates that the alarm has been acknowledged. An optional beacon and a horn are required for annunciation of alarms. The cause of the alarm is provided by the display screen. To acknowledge the indicator, turn the "ACKN and LAMP TEST" switch (12) to the "ACKN" position. The indicator will remain illuminated until the alarm condition is resolved.
"PLC FAILURE" indicator (6) - The programmable logic control regularly sends a signal to a timer. If the timer fails to receive the signal, the yellow "PLC FAILURE" indicator illuminates. This indicates that the programmable logic control may not be providing full protection for the engine. Prolonged operation in this abnormal condition may cause damage to the engine. Correct this condition as soon as possible. The information on the display screen may not be correct when the "PLC FAILURE" indicator is active. Use the backup gauges for accurate information. If the programmable logic control is inoperative, the redundant shutdown system will provide minimum protection.
"ENGINE PRELUBE" indicator (7) - This green indicator illuminates when the engine is prelubed and ready to start. The indicator is extinguished when the engine is running.
"EMERGENCY STOP" button (8) - The emergency stop button is in the OUT position for normal engine operation. Press the button for an emergency stop. This shuts off the fuel supply and the inlet air to the engine. The button will lock in position. Do not use the button for normal stopping. Before restarting the engine, correct the condition that made the emergency stop necessary. The engine will not start when the button is locked. To reset the button, turn the button clockwise. The control panel and the air shutoff must also be reset before the engine will start.
"OFF/RESET, LOCAL, and REMOTE" switch (9) - Turn the switch to the "OFF/RESET" position in order to reset the control panel after a shutdown. Do not use this switch for normal stopping. The engine will not start when the switch is in the "OFF/RESET" position. This three-position keyswitch determines the control mode of the engine. When the switch is in the "LOCAL" position, the engine is controlled only from the control panel. When the switch is in the "REMOTE" position, the engine is controlled from a different location.
"PRELUBE, RUN, and START" switch (10) - This switch is only active if the "OFF/RESET, LOCAL, and REMOTE" switch is in the "LOCAL" position. Also, the engine must be stopped with no active engine faults. Turn the switch to the "PRELUBE" position in order to activate the prelube pump prior to starting. The starting motors will not engage if the engine is not prelubed. The green "ENGINE PRELUBE" indicator will illuminate when an oil pressure of
"FUEL CONTROL" switch (11) - This switch controls the fuel to the engine. To supply fuel to the engine, turn the switch to the "ON" position. To shut off fuel to the engine, turn the switch to the "OFF" position. This is the normal procedure for stopping the engine. The "OFF" position may also be used in order to engage the starting motors for rotating the crankshaft without starting the engine.
"ACKN and LAMP TEST" switch (12) - To acknowledge an alarm condition, turn this switch to the "ACKN" position. The flashing of the alarm indicator will stop and the annunciator (if equipped) will be silenced. To check the indicator lamps on the control panel, turn the switch to the "LAMP TEST" position. This will also test the alarm annunciator (if equipped). The spring-loaded switch will return to the middle position after the switch is released.
Screen (13) - This screen is a touchscreen. The screen displays information about the status of the engine. The screen is also used to configure the Marine Monitoring System for the particular engine. The configuration includes the following features:
- The optional gauges can be customized, enabled, or disabled.
- Metric units or English units can be selected for the display.
- The language that will be displayed can be selected. A keypad is required for this feature.
- The communication ports can be selected and/or configured.
- The auxiliary gauges can be configured.
- Any auxiliary alarms can be configured.
An operator can choose from the following menu of monitoring features by using the screen:
Engine Overview - This window provides a general summary of the engine operation. This window graphically displays a top view of the engine. This window also displays the following operating parameters: rpm, engine hours, operating temperatures and operating pressures.
Auxiliary Gauges - This window displays the information that is provided by the auxiliary gauges.
Status and Auxiliary Outputs - This window is used to monitor the status of the communication for auxiliary parameters.

An "Alarm Annunciator" window appears on the screen. To view a graphic display of the particular alarm, touch the "SUMMARY ALARM" button that is illuminated in the "Alarm Annunciator" window.
This window can also display a history of all the alarms that have occurred. A log of the events is recorded by the Marine Monitoring System. The log can be saved to a floppy disk. A report can be made from the record of the events.
In addition to annunciation for undesirable engine operating conditions, an alarm will be displayed for the following conditions:
- A sensor output is out of specification.
- A wire from a contactor has failed.
- A wire from a contactor has been removed.
For example, the pressure sensor for lube oil is a 4 to 20 mA output. If the output from the pressure sensor is 22 mA, an alarm for the sensor will be displayed.
If a wire for a contactor is normally open, the closed side of the contactor is used in order to determine the continuity of the circuit. If the wire has failed or if the wire has been removed, an alarm for the sensor will be displayed.
Air and Fuel - This window displays a set of gauges that show the parameters of the air system and the fuel system.
