NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: The crankshaft adapter must be installed on the crankshaft in order to install the wear sleeve. If the crankshaft adapter was removed, Steps 1 through 4 describe installation of the crankshaft adapter. If the crankshaft adapter was not removed, go to Step 6.

    Illustration 1g00633265

    Typical example

  1. Install Tooling (A) into the front of the crankshaft.

  1. Make sure that the arrow on the crankshaft adapter will point in the direction of the crankshaft rotation when the crankshaft adapter is installed. Attach a suitable lifting device to crankshaft adapter (1). Lift the crankshaft adapter onto Tooling (A). The crankshaft adapter weighs approximately 77 kg (170 lb).

    (E) Full nut

  1. Install Tooling (B) into two of the holes in the front housing. Bolts (3) for the adapter of the crankshaft seal will be installed in these holes later.

  1. Place a new wear sleeve into Tooling (C). Make sure that the arrow on the outside of the wear sleeve will point in the direction of the crankshaft rotation when the wear sleeve is installed.

  1. Apply Tooling (F) to the inside diameter of the wear sleeve.

  1. Place Tooling (C) and the wear sleeve onto Tooling (B). Install Tooling (D) and Tooling (E) onto Tooling (B) .

  1. Tighten the nuts for Tooling (E) evenly in order to press the wear sleeve onto the crankshaft adapter. Press the wear sleeve onto the crankshaft adapter until the wear sleeve contacts the shoulder of the adapter.

  1. Remove Tooling (E), Tooling (D), Tooling (C), and Tooling (B) .

Installation of the Front Seal

Required Tools
Tool     Part Number     Part Description     Qty
A     1U-6241     Seal Installer

NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.

Note: The Tooling (A) is packaged with the new seal and adapter assembly. The seal installer helps to protect the seal. If the seal installer is separated from the seal prior to installation of the seal, the seal can be easily damaged. Do not remove the seal installer from the seal.

Note: Do not apply any lubricant to front seal (2). Do not touch the front seal when you handle the adapter and seal assembly. Be careful not to damage the front seal.

  1. Use clean engine oil to lubricate O-ring seal (1) on the outer diameter of the adapter.

    Illustration 5g00633173

    Typical example

  1. Install two 3/8-16 NC guide bolts (5) into the front housing.

    NOTICE

If a seal is installed on the wrong end of the crankshaft, the seal will fail. Each end of the crankshaft requires seals of different part numbers. Make sure that the correct seal is installed on each end of the crankshaft.

  1. Make sure that the arrow on the front seal will point in the direction of the crankshaft rotation when the front seal is installed. The crankshaft seal must be installed with the lip of the seal toward the crankshaft. Install the adapter and front seal assembly (4) (including Tooling (A) ) onto the guide bolts. Carefully position the adapter and front seal assembly (4) onto crankshaft adapter (3) .

Note: As the bolts that attach the adapter to the front housing are tightened, the Tooling (A) will fall away from the seal.

    Illustration 6g00633253

  1. Install the washers and bolts (6) that attach the front seal and adapter assembly (4) to the front housing. Tighten the bolts evenly until the front seal is seated on the wear sleeve and the adapter is seated against the front housing.

  1. Remove the guide bolts from the front housing. Install the two remaining washers and bolts (6) .

  1. Install bolts (7) that help to secure the wear sleeve on crankshaft adapter (3) .

End By: Install the vibration damper. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Vibration Damper - Install".
