Valve Train Noise

Usage:

AP-1000 1HD

Probable Causes

  • Excessive valve lash

  • Damage to valve train components

  • Insufficient lubrication

Recommended Repairs

Excessive Valve Lash

Check the valve lash. Ensure that the valve lash is adjusted to the correct specification. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing And Adjusting, "Valve Lash".

Damage to the Valve Train Components

Inspect the following valve train components:

  • Valves

  • Springs

  • Camshaft

  • Lifters

  • Retainers

  • Pushrods

  • Rocker arms

Check for worn parts or damaged parts. Replace damaged parts and also replace parts that are significantly worn.

Insufficient Lubrication

Check the lubrication in the valve compartment. There must be a small flow of oil at low engine speeds. There must be a strong flow of oil at high engine speeds. Oil passages must be clean. The oil passages that carry the oil to the cylinder head are particularly important.
