Description of Change: New seal kits are now available to provide greater protection against hydraulic oil leaks to the boom, stick, and bucket cylinders. The new kits feature improved high-temperature seals which resist wear for enhanced service life. The improved seal performance results in fewer leaks, reduced maintenance and improved productivity.

Adaptable To: The new seal kits are effective with and adaptable to the machines listed above. Refer to the following chart for a listing of the seal kits and the machines the kits service.

Caterpillar recommends the installation of a complete new seal kit when a leak is detected. Installing a new seal kit insures a quality repair. High-temperature seals can only be ordered as part of a seal kit.

Installation of the seal ring (1) must be done correctly or damage to the cylinder will happen. The cutout portion of the seal ring must face the piston. If the seal ring is installed incorrectly, a popping noise will result. Consult the Disassembly & Assembly and Specifications manuals provided with your machine. Refer to Illustrations 1 and 2 for the location of the seal ring.

The illustrations indicate the locations of the improved high-temperature seals within a hydraulic cylinder.
