Description of Change: Improvements have been made to the retention system for V1000 tips and couplers. The retainer assemblies have been strengthened by increasing the supporting washer of the retainer assembly from 5 mm (.20 in) to 7 mm (.28 in) thickness. Because this increase in thickness could cause interference with the tip and the bottom pocket walls, the tip counterbores are 5 mm (.2 in) deeper and bottom pocket walls are 5 mm (.2 in) thicker. The part numbers did not change with these changes. The current retainer assembly is identified by its black plastic holder whereas the new, heavier retainer assembly is identified by its yellow plastic holder.

The coupler retention system was improved by adding a step to the end of the pin that contacts a sleeve that is inserted in the coupler upper counterbore. The sleeve prevents any possible pin upward movement. The retainer is specially constructed with a crushable washer which assures that the snap ring will drop into the pin groove before pin movement is stopped by the sleeve. The retainer is shaped so that is can be installed only one way in the lower counterbore and the one surface is also marked "This side up". This new retainer assembly also has a yellow plastic holder.

NOTE: The pins can be installed with light hammer blows, but it will take several hard blows with a heavy hammer to shear the snap ring for removal. The pin and retainer are not reusable.

NOTE: The retainer assembly (leaf spring) is no longer required to hold pressure against the center of the pins.

Adaptable To: The improved retention system is adaptable to all 5230 (7LL) Excavators with V1000 size tips. The new retention system CANNOT be used with the former tips and couplers.

NOTE: 132-1107 Retainer Assembly (Leaf Spring) is no longer required to hold pressure against the center of the pins.

------ WARNING! ------

Wear safety glasses with protective side shields. Personal injury may occur if proper safety equipment is not worn.

-------WARNING!-------

NOTE: The pins can be installed with light hammer blows, but it will take some effort to expand the retainer snap ring. Once the retainer is on the full diameter of the pin, the pin can be easily driven in. A final gentle blow will enable the snap ring to drop into the pin groove. If the pin is hit excessively hard just before the snap ring drops into the pin groove, the retainer can be damaged and result in a loss of retention. The tip pins are installed from the top, whereas the coupler pin must be installed from the bottom.

Illustration 3.
To remove all pins, use a sledge hammer (A) and 1U-7184 Pin Removal Tool (B).

To replace a bucket tip or coupler, it will take several hard blows with a 5.5 to 9.0 Kg (12 to 20 lb) sledge hammer (A) to shear the retainer and drive the pin out. All pins are removed by driving them out the bottom. Use a 1U-7184 Pin Removal Tool (B) and safety glasses when removing the pins.
