Flywheel Housing - Remove and Install

Start By:

Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use a suitable lifting device to support the rear of the engine.

Remove bracket (1) from the flywheel housing.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (5). The weight of the flywheel housing is approximately 45 kg (100 lb).
Remove bolts (6) and bolts (7).
Remove bolts (2).
Remove cover (3) and cover (4).

Remove bolts (9) from the oil pan.
Remove the flywheel housing and the gasket from the cylinder block.

NOTICE

Install a new gasket on the cylinder block. Apply Tooling (B) to the oil pan gasket.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to flywheel housing (5). The weight of the flywheel housing is approximately 45 kg (100 lb). Position flywheel housing (5) on the cylinder block.
Install bolts (2).
Install bolts (6) and bolts (7).
Install bolt (8).
Tighten the bolts, by using the following procedure.
1. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 1 through Bolt 8. Tighten to a torque of 136 ± 14 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft).
2. In a numerical sequence, tighten Bolt 9 through Bolt 17. Tighten to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (41 ± 5 lb ft).
3. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt 1 through Bolt 8. Tighten to a torque of 136 ± 14 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft).
4. In a numerical sequence, again tighten Bolt 9 through Bolt 17. Tighten to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (41 ± 5 lb ft).
Install cover (3) and cover (4).

Install bolts (9) for the oil pan. Tighten the bolts for the oil pan to a torque of 55 ± 10 N·m (41 ± 7 lb ft).
