Test Procedure

System Operation

The SLC 5/04 diagnostic indicators are located on the front of the following components: Power Supply, CPU and I/O Modules.

The processor detects the loss of power to any chassis in the system. When power is lost, the "FLT" LED illuminates. When power is lost, all of the outputs of the controller are de-energized. A loss of power to the expansion chassis will cause a fault of the processor. This is due to a loss of communication. A loss of power to the primary chassis extinguishes the LED.

When the "FLT" LED is illuminated, there is a fatal error. A fatal error normally means that the processor is not communicating. The processor is not communicating with modules in one or more of the chassis.

Functional Test

  1. Check the electrical connectors and check the wiring.

      ------ WARNING! ------

Bodily contact with electrical potential can cause bodily injury or death.

To avoid the possibility of injury or death, ensure that the main power supply has been disconnected before performing any maintenance or removing any modules.

      ----------------------

    1. Disconnect the power supply.

    1. Check the electrical connectors and check the wiring for damage or bad connections.

    1. Verify that all modules are properly seated.

    1. Connect the power supply.

    1. Verify the status of the LED on the SLC 5/04.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • All of the components are fully installed. All of the components are free of corrosion. All of the components are free of damage. All of the modules are properly seated. Proceed to 2.

      • The components are not fully installed. The components are not free of corrosion. The components are damaged. All of the modules are not properly seated. Repair the component. Verify that the repair resolves the problem. STOP.

  1. Check the fuse for the power supply.

      ------ WARNING! ------

Bodily contact with electrical potential can cause bodily injury or death.

To avoid the possibility of injury or death, ensure that the main power supply has been disconnected before performing any maintenance or removing any modules.

      ----------------------

    1. Ensure that the power supply has been disconnected.

    1. Check the fuse for the power supply.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The fuse is serviceable. Proceed to 3.

      • The fuse is not serviceable. Proceed to 4.

  1. Check the line voltage.

    1. Reconnect the power supply.

    1. Measure the line voltage at the terminals.

    1. Verify the voltage of the power supply. The power supply voltage should be measured between 21.0 VDC and 28.0 VDC.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The line voltage is in the range. Proceed to 5.

      • The line voltage is out of the range. Refer to Maintenance Procedure, "Power Supply - Replace".

  1. Replace the fuse for the power supply.

    1. Open the door for the power supply. Use fuse pullers and remove the fuse.

    1. Replace the fuse.

Note: Use the correct fuse. Match the type of fuse and match the rating of the fuse. Improper selection of a fuse can result in equipment damage.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The power supply is functioning normally. Stop.

      • The power supply is not functioning normally. Proceed to 5.

  1. Check for an overloaded power supply.

      NOTICE

To avoid potential damage to the processor, handle all modules by the ends of the carrier or edges of the plastic housing. Skin oil or dirt can corrode metallic surfaces, inhibiting electrical contact.

    1. Remove all of the modules from the chassis.

    1. Wait for five minutes.

    1. Connect the power supply.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The system power is functioning normally. Proceed to 6.

      • Recalculate the power requirements of the module configuration. Verify that the correct power supply is selected. Refer to Maintenance Procedure, "Power Supply - Replace".

  1. Reconnect the output modules.

      NOTICE

To avoid potential damage to the processor, handle all modules by the ends of the carrier or edges of the plastic housing. Skin oil or dirt can corrode metallic surfaces, inhibiting electrical contact.

    1. Reconnect the modules one at a time.

    1. Monitor the system power after you replace each module.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The system power is functioning normally. Proceed to 7.

      • The system power fails when one of the modules is installed. Proceed to 8.

  1. Check for intermittent problems.

    1. Monitor the line voltage to the power supply.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:

      • The LED indicators display a problem in the power supply. Refer to Maintenance Procedure, "Power Supply - Replace".

      • The LED indicators do not display a problem in the power supply. Stop.

  1. Verify that the fault is in the module.

    1. Replace the suspect module.

    1. Install the new module into the chassis.

    1. Connect the power supply.

The results of the preceding procedure are in the following list:
