Procedure to Replace the Steering Pin on Certain AP355F Asphalt Pavers {4300, 4304, 4309, 4338, 4343}

Introduction

The following instructions provide the steps necessary to replace the steering pin and steering column hub on certain AP355F Asphalt Pavers.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Observe all safety precautions recommended by the chemical manufacturer for handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals.

Climbing equipment may be required to access this service point. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Mounting and Dismounting" topic for safety information.


------ WARNING! ------

Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed.

Do not operate the machine if any guards or covers are missing or inadequately secured. Personnel could be seriously injured or machine damage may occur.

Observe the safe working load limits of all lifting and blocking devices and keep a safe distance from suspended/blocked loads. Personnel may be seriously injured or killed by falling loads.

Installation Procedure

When replacing the steering pin, use the following procedure:

  1. Remove the steering wheel and retain hardware for reuse. Refer to "Steering Wheel - Remove and Install" in the media listed above.

    Note: Once the steering control group (Type 1 or Type 2) and mounting plates are removed, the remainder of the disassembly and reassembly procedure is the same.

  2. Remove the Type 1 or Type 2 steering control group and retain the hardware for reuse. Discard the 8T-0277 Spring Pin. Refer to "Steering Control (Force Control) - Remove and Install" in the media listed above.

  3. Disassemble the steering control and retain the hardware for reuse, except for the existing retaining rings. The retaining rings will be replaced with new snap rings (2) during reassembly. Refer to "Steering Control (Force Control) - Disassemble" in the media listed above.

  4. Assemble the steering control in the reverse order of disassembly using a new hub (1) and four new snap rings (2). Apply threadlocking compound to the setscrew threads (A) before assembly.

  5. Temporarily install the last (fourth) snap ring (2) onto the new hub (1) by positioning it between the last two grooves in the hub.

  6. Complete the assembly of the steering control by installing a new dowel (3). Reposition the last snap ring (2) into the groove, making sure that the opening is oriented 90 degrees from the dowel (3).

  7. Install the steering control on the machine in the reverse order of removal.

  8. Install the steering wheel.
