Procedure to Replace the Steering Pin on Certain AP300F Asphalt Pavers {4300, 4304, 4309, 4338, 4343}

Introduction

The following instructions provide the steps necessary to replace the steering pin and steering column hub on certain AP300F Asphalt Pavers.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed.

Do not operate the machine if any guards or covers are missing or inadequately secured. Personnel could be seriously injured or machine damage may occur.

Observe the safe working load limits of all lifting and blocking devices and keep a safe distance from suspended/blocked loads. Personnel may be seriously injured or killed by falling loads.

Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the steering wheel and retain hardware for reuse. Refer to "Steering Wheel - Remove and Install" in the media listed above.

  2. Remove the steering control and retain hardware for reuse. Refer to "Steering Control (Force Control) - Remove and Install" in the media listed above.

  3. Disassemble the steering control and retain hardware for reuse. Refer to "Steering Control (Force Control) - Disassemble" in the media listed above.

    (A) Setscrew (retained during disassembly)
    (1) 535-8869 Hub
    (2) 1L-8497 Snap Ring

  4. Reassemble the steering column in the reverse order of disassembly, using a new hub (1). Make sure to apply threadlocker to the threads of the setscrew (A).

  5. Temporarily install the snap ring (2) onto the new hub (1). Position the snap ring (2) past the groove and above the hole.

  6. Assemble the steering control to the new hub and install a new dowel (3).

  7. After assembling the steering control, install the snap ring (2) into the groove, making sure that the opening is oriented 90 degrees from the dowel (3).

  8. Install the steering column in the reverse order of removal.

  9. Install the steering wheel.
