Flashing the Graphical Display

Equipment Required

On an M-series MWL, there are two service ports: the main service port (CAN and CDL datalink, located to the operator's right) and the VIMS service port (ethernet, located to the operator's left and down on the back wall). To flash the display on an M-series, you need to connect your PC RJ45 ethernet port to the VIMS service port using cable 457-6114 Wiring Harness and then connect ET winflash using the PC's adapter set to "direct ethernet connection".

  • VIMS cable: ( 457-6114 Wiring Harness)

  • Current version of Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool.

  • PC with an Ethernet Port

Note: The display can be flashed with a direct Ethernet connection. To flash with Ethernet, connect an Ethernet cable to the RJ45 port on the CA3 adapter harness. Connect the remaining end of the Ethernet cable to the LAN connection on the computer.

Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool Setup Instructions

Note: If using the Laptop Ethernet Port, then turn OFF (Do NOT minimize) all other applications prior to starting Cat ET. Optionally use a USB to Ethernet Adapter.

  1. Connect to WINFLASH in Cat ET.

  2. Under the "Utilities" menu, select "Preferences".

  3. Select "Modify" to change connection settings in Cat ET.

  6. Cat ET may attempt to reconnect based on the change of Communication Protocol. Click "Yes" (Illustration 4).

    Illustration 4g03485596

  7. When Cat ET reconnects, Cat ET will attempt to detect an ECM using "IP Data Link" (Illustration 5).

  8. Select the Flash File when the ECM is detected. Initiate the Flash process (Illustration 6).

Note: Wait until Cat ET shows 100% completed, even if the display looks like it is working during Flashing.

  11. After Flashing, change Communication settings back to "Comm Adapter 3" (or "Comm Adapter 2").

    Illustration 12g03494483

  12. Connect to Cat ET.

  13. Go to Display "Configurations".

  14. Verify that the Product ID matches the Machine Product ID. If the Product ID does not match, change the cycle power to the machine. Changing the cycle power to the machine allows the Display to re-request the Product ID from the Machine ECM. (Illustration 13).

Note: This machine cannot manually change product ID configuration. This is supported in the ECM summary screen in ET, but not in the configuration area.

Note: Illustration 13 is a sample screenshot for D9T REX00301. New Flashing information will be different.

Flashing Example

The following is an example of approximate numbers and timing recorded during a Flash with no bus traffic:

Note: Data Link traffic and timing will vary between machines.

  • Cat ET shows 18% at 16 seconds.

  • Cat ET shows 45% at approximately 26 seconds.

  • Reboot at 38 seconds.

  • Eboot erasing at 48 seconds.

  • Eboot loading done at 1:04.

  • Erasing NOR at 1:05.

  • Erasing NOR OS space ends at 2:37.

  • Programming OS starts at 2:38.

  • Programming OS ends at 6:14.

  • Display has rebooted, but is older cab file at 6:30.

  • Cat ET shows 50% at 6:38.

  • Cat ET shows 90% at 6:45.

  • Reboots.

  • Cab file extraction at 7:07.

  • Reboots and shows new cab file at 8:09.

  • Cat ET shows 100% at 8:19.
