Start By:

  1. Remove the air inlet manifold.

------ WARNING! ------

Do not open the high pressure fuel system without allowing the fuel system to purge. After the engine has shut down, allow the fuel system to purge for ten minutes. This operating fuel system contains high pressure. Exposure to high pressure fuel can result in personal injury.

  1. Turn the fuel supply to the OFF position.

Note: Use Tooling (A) to cap tube assemblies, fittings, ports, and any opening in the fuel system to prevent contamination.

  4. Remove bolt (10), tube assembly (7), bolts (8), and quill tube assembly (9).

  5. Repeat Step 4 for the remaining quill tube assemblies (9).

Note: Do not remove all the quill tube assemblies. Keep at least two quill tube assemblies attached to maintain alignment of the high-pressure fuel rail.

  6. Attach a suitable lifting device to high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11). The weight of high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11) is approximately 86 kg (190 lb).

  7. Remove remaining quill tube assemblies (9), bolts (12), and high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11). Refer to Step 4.

  8. Repeat Step 2 through Step 7 for the opposite side.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11) in the reverse order of removal.

    1. Tighten bolts (12) on the left side of the engine in the following order of corresponding cylinders numbered 10 ,12, 8, 14, 6, 16, 4, 18, 2, then 20.

    2. Tighten bolts (12) on the right side of the engine in the following order of corresponding cylinders numbered 9, 11, 7, 13, 5, 15, 3, 17, 1, then 19.

    3. Apply Tooling (B) to the O-rings on quill tube assemblies (9).

    4. Lubricate both sealing surfaces of quill tube assemblies (9) with clean engine oil.

    5. Hand tighten bolts (8) into the cylinder head , then hand tighten bolts (8) into high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11).

    6. Tighten bolts (8) into the cylinder head to a torque of 20 N·m (177 lb in). Do not rotate bolts (8) more than 90° at one time.

    7. Tighten bolts (8) into high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11) to a torque of 20 N·m (177 lb in). Do not rotate bolts (8) more than 90° at one time.

    8. Tighten bolts (8) into the cylinder head to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft). Do not rotate bolts (8) more than 45° at one time.

    9. Tighten bolts (8) into high-pressure fuel rail assembly (11) to a torque of 40 ± 5 N·m (30 ± 4 lb ft). Do not rotate bolts (8) more than 45° at one time.
