Start By:

  1. Remove the final drives. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive - Remove".


NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Remove plug (1) and drain the oil into a suitable container for storage or for disposal.

  2. Remove bolts (2) and cover (3).

  3. Remove gasket (4).

  4. Make reference marks on the caps and the housing for installation purposes. Remove bolts (5) and caps (6).

  5. Use Tooling (A) to spread the differential housing. Remove differential (9), shims (7), and bearing cups (8). Keep shims (7) and bearing cups (8) together for assembly purposes.

  6. Remove bolts (10) and remove bevel gear (11).

  7. Put identification marks on differential (9) for assembly purposes. Separate differential (9).

  8. Remove clutch pack (12).

  9. Note the orientation of friction discs (13) and clutch plates (14).

  10. Remove side gear (15).

  11. Position differential (9) into a suitable vise. Use a suitable hammer and a punch to remove pins (16).

  12. Remove washers (17), spider gears (18), and shaft (23) from spider (19). Remove washers (20), spider gears (21), and half shafts (22) from spider (19).

  13. Remove side gear (24) and the clutch pack.

  15. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to remove bearing cone (27) from differential (9).

  16. Use Tooling (B) and a suitable press to remove bearing cone (28) from differential (9).

  17. Remove bolts (29) and flange (30).

  18. Use Tooling (B) and Tooling (C) to remove coupling (31). Coupling (31) is locked into the sleeve by a lock ring.

  19. Straighten nut (33) out of the locking tab on pinion shaft (34).

  20. Use Tooling (D) and a suitable socket to remove nut (33).

  21. Remove O-ring (35) and sleeve (36).

  23. Use a soft faced hammer and tap on pinion shaft (34) to remove pinion shaft (34).
