Test Preparation

Steering Frame Lock in the STORED Position

  1. Move steering frame lock to the STORED position.

  2. The engine should be at high idle throughout the warm-up procedure. Continuously stall the RACK BACK position while simultaneously raising the lift arms at full speed. When the lift arms are almost raised, cycle the tilt cylinder to the FULL DUMP position. Then cycle to the RACK BACK position. Continuously stall the RACK BACK function and simultaneously lower the lift arms back to ground level. Without stalling the rack back function, cycle lift function to raise and lower the lift arms. This procedure will allow the pump to operate at low pressure and circulate oil through out the system. Repeat this procedure until the hydraulic oil is at 62° ± 8°C (143.6° ± 14.4°F).

  3. Park the machine on a surface that is hard, dry, and level.

  4. Place the transmission selector lever in the NEUTRAL position.

Note: The hydraulic controls should also be in the NEUTRAL position. The parking brake should be disengaged.

Test Procedure

  1. The operator must be present in seat.

  2. The left-hand armrest must be down.

  3. Position the lift arms at mid-lift.

  4. Articulate the machine to the left or to the right until the machine stops articulating.

  5. Run the engine at high idle.

Note: Start to measure steering time when you start to move the joystick. Measure steering time until the machine stops articulating.

  6. Articulate the machine in the opposite direction until the machine stops articulating. Steering time should be 3.1 seconds for EH steering and 2.4 seconds for HMU steering.

Note: The difference between the left steering time and the right steering time should not be greater than 0.5 seconds.

  7. If the steering time is not within specifications, check the primary steering system. See the following reference.

Reference: For the correct procedure to check the primary steering pilot supply pressure, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, "Steering Pilot System Pressure - Test"
for the machine that is being serviced.

Reference: For the correct procedure to check the margin pressure for the piston pump, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, "Piston Pump (Steering) Margin Pressure - Test and Adjust" for the machine that is being serviced.
