Escaping fluid under pressure, even a pinhole size leak, can penetrate body tissue, causing serious injury, and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury. Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak. |
Personal injury or death can result if two persons are not used in the following procedure. |
Personal injury or death can result from a brake malfunction. Do not operate the machine if the parking brake was engaged due to a malfunction of the hydraulic oil system or the service brakes. Correct any problem before attempting to operate the machine. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Note: Be sure to keep oil off the parking brake disc and pads. Pads that have been in contact with oil need to be replaced.

- Use feeler gages to measure the clearance between the front pad and the rotor. Turn centering bolt until clearance is
0.35 ± 0.10 mm (0.014 ± 0.004 inch) and tighten jam nut.Show/hide tableIllustration 4 g03684633 - Remove the cap covering the adjustment screw (6).
- Using a ratchet wrench and 1/2 inch socket, turn the screw (6) until the rear pad (5) to rotor (4) gap is
0.35 ± 0.10 mm (0.014 ± 0.004 inch) . Use feeler gage to measure clearance. Reinstall the dust cap. - Release the hydraulic pressure.
- Start the engine, engage the parking brake, and place the gear selector in manual mode.
- Move the direction control from "F" to "N" to "F" with in 3 seconds. The parking brake lockout is now disabled.
- Select the second gear forward. Slowly increase the engine to high idle while monitoring the RPM. Refer to Table 1. If machine holds at RPM, brake check is complete. If the machine moves before RPM is reached, go to step 4
- Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position. Install the steering lock engage the parking brake and chock the wheels.
- Readjust park brake to
0.35 mm (0.014 inch) running clearance between each pad and disc, using the adjust procedure outlined in the previous section. - Repeat Step 1 through Step 3. If machine still does not meet the required engine speed, replace brake pads.
